37 Buick Special Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 I have a 37 Special and while the block is a 37 I suspect the head is a replacement. Does anyone know where I can find part numbers for heads? This one has the part number of 13002277. Thanks, Dave
MCHinson Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 That number does not appear in my chassis parts book as a part number for any cylinder head for Buicks between 1928 and 1941. It could be a later head but I suspect the number is a casting number rather than the part number and thus I have no idea how you can identify it by that number. Often the casting numbers are not that far off from the part number so they can lead to a lot of confusion. 1937 Cylinder Head part numbers are 1297514 for 40 Series (regular jobs), 1293271 for 40 Series (high speed jobs), and 1301923 for Series 60-80-90.
37 Buick Special Posted June 3, 2017 Author Posted June 3, 2017 MCHinson, Thank you for your quick and informative reply. I will take a look to see what else is on the head. OK, the only other castings on it are a GM and then a 12 and a 13. It has only two threaded holes for the studs that go into the head to hold the valve cover down with the acorn nuts. Seems it might be a much later head?? Thanks, Dave
DonMicheletti Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 I think the 2 stud valve cover hold down started in late '38
Gary W Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 My '37 has three studs/acorns on the rocker cover. Two on the spark plug cover.
37 Buick Special Posted June 4, 2017 Author Posted June 4, 2017 Thanks Gary, I did check your photos for that. HOWEVER, the head on my engine has two threaded holes for the studs. The center acorn was on a dummy stud. So the head must be later. Again, fantastic postings you are doing. Quite the documentation for others in the future. Dave
Glassesguy Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Agree with Don M. I have the Service Bulletins showing the change.
