Pete Phillips
How do you get the window crank handles for a 1937 Buick replated without destroying the knobs? And then, how do you reattach them? Or is there a way to replate these without removing the knobs? Pete Phillips, BCA #7338 Leonard, Texas
MCHinson
I have never taken mine off, so I have no idea how the knob is attached. I do know that Bob's sells replacement knobs.
dibarlaw
Pete : The plastic knobs snap in. Pressed in. Being 80 years old some of my spares have the knobs crumbled off. Of course they are destroyed when the handle is being plated. I will check for you. 1939_Buick
For '39 I have never been able to get a knob off without destroying it Skip Boyer probably has repro knobs Or Bob's http://bobsautomobilia.com/handles-and-knobs/ http://bobsautomobilia.com/handles-and-knobs/page-6/ Page 6 $110 each. With your labour cost/rechrome may be about the same $ Edited April 5, 2017 by 1939_Buick added link (see edit history)
dibarlaw
Pete: Those are not 37 Handles. At least they are not what is on my car. I took my spare with a split knob and removed it. There is a steel cap on the inside. I drilled it out with a 5/16" drill. Then I drove the steel core stem out with a 1/4" punch. They may have been swaged to the counter bore on the back side. Pete Phillips
This '37 I am working on is a Canadian-built car, so it has a few differences from US-built cars. Larry, how do you reattach the knob after drilling out the excess overhang? Pete
DonMicheletti
After drilling odd the riveted end and getting the knob out, I have drilled and tapped the steel pin and used a washer and flat head allen screw to reattach them - if the plastic is still good
dibarlaw
I would agree with Don. On my USA original there is the steel arbor to do this to. I have not seen what Skip Boyer or Bob's looks like. BOB'S on line catalog may have an image.
