1957 buick

old car fan

Recommended Posts

It screws into the left end of the speedometer housing, which can either be reached from underneath the dashboard (if you have small, thin hands), or unscrew and pull off the top part of the dashboard and reach in from the top. The other end, of course, screws into the side of the transmission.

Make sure you only lube the bottom third of the cable.  It will work it's own way up. If you lube the whole cable it will likely work into the speedo head and cause all kinds of troubles.

I *think* that you can pull the inner cable out from the end where it connects to the transmission.  I just did this on my 60, and it should be similar to yours.  I'm working on a 55 Pontiac, and it is the same way.

Many cables will have a collar at the speedometer end, especially if a repair kit was used in the past and cannot be pulled from the transmission end.
