There appears to be a pivot in the center under the upper beam, so if you wanted to change direction on the rails, you could just turn the entire beam and car body 180 degrees, and drive the other way! In a railroad trade magazine from the eighties I read that a Chev Suburban on steel wheels, got 60-65 MPG in track inspection and maintenance duties.
