COUNT DOWN TO IOWA

RICK YOUNG

Recommended Posts

T-minus 38 days and counting till the 2010 National in Ames.

I'll be posting ongoing info here along with some of my favorite places here in Iowa.

The Sweet Corn for the Friday night Cruise to Jewell is planted and is now about 2 feet tall (note pics).

We planted it in several differant locations to try to beat the forces of nature (ie; rain, hail, drought, raccoons). Also staggered planting dates to make sure the maturity matches our taget date. As of today all 3 fields are looking good.

Registrations are good and looking better every day.

Check back for more updates.

A FACE BOOK ADDRESS COMING HERE SOON

Heck.... I thought you would just go to a roadside stand and buy it..... this is some serious planning on the sweet corn. If everything else is to this detail, Ames may be the best National meet ever.

What about the butter? Are you growing that also?

That's nothing, we put the "Boars in" 167 days ago for the Barbeque Pork. The pigs are starting to look nervous. Turkeys are a much quicker turnaround and not as brite.

We use the extra corn to make Margerine. Gonna need those Wisconsin Buicks to be the "Butter Runners".

I will have used up all my favors of friends by late July. They're already crossing the street to avoid me.

They've put me on the "Do Not Call List".

Looking good, especially since I just got finished seeding our corn this morning...with decent weather, our should be ready late August, so we won't miss it when we are down south.

Yes, this is when panic time sets in. The Electra (driven class) has been cleaned up (for those of you who saw it in St. Paul, you can actually see now that it isn't black and that the paint is metallic. The top, while not perfect, is much cleaner. The wagon is presently laid up awaiting a few parts to make it a bit more driveable. After that, I need to spend some time in the garage with it and my friend Mr. Meguiar. I'm not entirely sure how I'll fit it all in, but there's just over a week of school left, so I'll have some extra slave labour around here. There's a couple of touch up items I'd like to do with the wagon, but not sure whether it will happen or not.

Looking forward to it...even more so if the time off work was actually already approved.

I've been a BCA member for four years and have talked about going to a national every year, this morning I made the hotel reservations and sent in my show registration. My decision was easy after a phone conversation with a dear freind and long time BCA member who recently lost his wife; he told me to take advantage of and enjoy all thats available because life is too short for regrets and "wish I would haves". My wife and I will be bringing our 48' 56C and are looking forward to the week in Ames.

FYI Reiman Gardens is in Ames and on Campus

WORLD'S LARGEST CONCRETE GNOME INSTALLED AT REIMAN GARDENS

Gnome is the Centerpiece of Reiman Gardens’ Celebration of Garden Ornamentation

Ames, Iowa- Iowa State University's Reiman Gardens has an enormous new inhabitant, a garden gnome of gigantic proportions.

At 15-feet-tall and nearly 3,500 pounds, the yet unnamed creation is the World's Largest Concrete Gnome, besting the old record by two feet, set by a gnome in New York. A fiberglass replica located in Poland is reported to be taller, but not made of concrete.

Crafted by Andy and Connie Kautza, owners of National Rock and Sculpture, Inc., the gnome traveled 400 miles from Wausau, Wisconsin to its new home in the south-central neck the Gardens. Plans are to keep it for several years. Garden gnome figurines date back to the 1800’s and are a good luck charm for gardeners and farmers.

The gnome displays will be in the Gardens until mid-October.

I could see the small people being interested in the Filling Station, if for nothing else than what they sell. You may just need to make up a map though otherwise Bill will be left wondering where his co-chair is...turns out he went home. I don't know about gnomes, but it has always been a plan to spend some time in the gardens.

Say, are there any mosquitoes down that way? We've had about a month of wet weather and they are getting crazy up here...a reprieve would be nice.

Mosquitoes???????.........Oh no.......... we don't have mosquitoes.

Yes we do, but not the super size I saw fishing up north 30 years ago.

With all the hard surface surrounding the show field in Ames it shouldn't be that bad.

Also, before the cruise to Jewell Night I gave instructions to spray the entire City using our new atomizer machine.

We have had lots of rain this spring, but so far the bugs haven't been to bad.

I met Bill for the first time several years ago at a Hawkeye Chapter meeting.

TURNS OUT!!! His Dad taught my Dad in Shop Class more than 70 years ago at Stanhope High School here in Iowa.

To start a better place to request this is here:

Buy/Sell - AACA Forums

A good way to keep tabs on what is out there try Googling this:

1951 buick site:craigslist.org

or

1951 buick site:ebay.com

Also I would be remiss if I didn't suggest you join the BCA/AACA, the resources at our collective disposal is something that you would be smart to take advantage of ;)

Good luck with your search....
