Numbers are 1/4" high. Obviously, you need to remove some sheet metal.Al MackBCA #8965"500 Miles West of Flint" Edited August 2, 2012 by 1953mack added pic (see edit history)
old-tank
I have never seen a number in that location on a 55. However the number will be found on the top of the right side (passenger) frame between the exhaust hanger and the end. Easy to read with the body off...Willie

I am looking for this number on my 1955 Buick Century 4 Drs HT because here in Europe this is the only number that counts. Could you be more specific where it is located? In other words, what are we looking at here and where is that? Many ThanksPatrick David Edited April 20, 2014 by patrick david (see edit history)

old-tank
The rectangular chalk outlines the area of the stamped numbers. Just remove the body or cut the quarter out like I did or find someone with a tiny remote tv camera or endoscope. That will be the same number as the tag on the left front door pillar.Willie

Bhigdog
Some factory number stampers might not be able to tell their right from their left. The #'s on both my 55's and my 55 Olds were on the driver side..................Bob

Bhigdog
Maybe strange...................but true.....................Not a problem if the body is off. A nightmare otherwise. I wonder if all the frames were made in the same or several different plants..................Bob Edited April 20, 2014 by Bhigdog (see edit history)
Bhigdog
Here's another question. Mike posted a pix of his frame #. Door post #'s have a numeral showing assembly plant, mine is 6 (Atlanta) but Mikes frame # does not use a first numeral. Does that mean the frames came from one plant and the door plate was stamped to match the frame at another plant with the added first number? .......................Bob
sean1997
The serial number format used for 1954 (after 4/1/54) through 1964 is:SYP001001S = series digit (omitted on 1954 model year prior to 4/1/54)Y = year digitP = plant digit001001 = sequential number, usually starting at 001001 for each plant (some years of Flint started lower than 001001, these are 1957, 1958, and 1959)So the missing first digit is the series digit (4=40/Special, 5=50/Super, 6=60/Century, 7=70/Roadmaster), not the plant digit. So the number on his frame decodes like this:B2054786B = 19552 = South Gate, CA054786 = sequential number, range for South Gate was 001001 to 087498
Bhigdog
Thanks for that and it agrees with both my 55 and 57 #'s. That makes my car a Linden, NJ car. The manual is very misleading but that explains why the frame doesn't carry a digit before the letter since the frame could be used to build either a series 40 or 60.................Bob
