  1. Hey guys, I have found a console for my '64 Electra and I need to change the color of the plastic parts of it. What do I need to do to prepare the surface and what is the best paint? Thanks in advance

  4. That's a great idea, that's why I bought a soda blaster. It works well but sanding is still easier and less...... messy. Thanks for the great idea.
  5. Hey guys, I am getting ready to strip all the paint off of my '64 Electra and get it ready for new paint. I have seen some people strip paint with a sanding pad that kinda looks like an abrasive sponge disc, while others are using a regular sand paper disc. both were used on an angle grinder style of tool. I am going out to buy a dual action sander/polisher tomorrow but I am wondering what is the best to strip the old paint down to metal? Any areas I cannot access with the sander will be cleaned off with my soda blaster. Before anyone says anything, I know I don't "need" to take it to bare metal but I "want" to. Oh Yeah, one last thing, acid dipping would be ideal but just isn't practical or I would do it. Any tips will be welcome.
  6. It's currently sitting on my dad's farm. He has had a wrecking yard there for decades. The person my dad bought it from brought it to my dad to replace the transmission about 30 years ago. It ran at that time. Dad removed the transmission but the guy changed his mind about fixing it and dad bought it. Dad says the floors are pretty bad and it's obvious on the doors. About 3 or 4 years ago dad sold the car to a guy in the US, He is on this forum and I think his name is Tri Shield. The '59 was still there when I picked up my '64 Electra convertible 2 years ago. As far as I know the car is still there. If you are interested in the or or parts from it ping Tri Shield. Cheers,

  9. Almost 20 years ago my dad rebuilt the driveline in this car, tested it for about 20 miles and then shut it off. It seized up from sitting. I tore it down and put it back together and now it is running again!! There is about 15-20 minutes of run time on it now and the ticking noise you hear in the clip is just a loose pipe to manifold on the drivers side. <embed src="http://p.webshots.com/flash/smallplayer.swf?videoFile=http://videoserve.webshots.com/video/34652/3060430740012311043nSgShc_v_0.flv&audio=on&displayImagePreview=http://videothumb13.webshots.com/thumb/34652/3060430740012311043nSgShcstill_002_0.jpg&videoPageUrl=http://rides.webshots.com/video/3060430740012311043nSgShc&autoPlay=false&shareLink=http://cards.webshots.com/ecard/personalize?photoId=3060430740012311043%26source=v" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" quality="best" allowscriptaccess="always"></embed><br/><br/><a href="http://rides.webshots.com/video/3060430740012311043nSgShc">Buick restore 128.AVI</a>

  13. I am 45. I grew up with Buicks because my dad was a Buick man. I remember many trips in my dads 1964 Buick Electra convertible. My first Buick was a 1968 Buick Skylark GS 350. I was 14 when my dad gave it to me. It was a "some assembly required" type of car. My dad had a wrecking yard and bought wrecks to resell parts from. This one had some front end damage that had to be repaired before it could be driven but I was 14 and had a couple of years to do it before I had my license. I've had a few Buicks and Oldsmobiles in my life since then and currently have my dads 1964 Buick Electra convertible.
  14. Unfortunately my project car needs more than just the 4 floor pan pieces. Mine needs the cross pieces, the floor under the back seat and the tunnel. The floor I need to replace is not repairable.
  15. It really is like being in a time machine. I think that's why my dad likes going there so much. I'll never forget the day I walked down one of their main streets in Havana and seeing a whole street full of 50's cars angle parked in front of their capital building. It was incredibly nostalgic to me but daily life to them! And of course one cannot forget about their tasty exports...
  16. I will be doing all the welding myself so I will only be able to hold myself accountable :-) I do plan on using new body bushings and bolts. I see you have bracing in the door ways. Is this something you did or did the welding shop do it? Were there any problems lining up doors etc when the welding was done?
  17. Hey Pete, I have just read through this entire thread and I just want to let you know that you have inspired me to do the right thing with my car. I have a 1964 Buick Electra convertible and the floor is pretty much the same as your was. I was lucky enough to find another 1964 Buick electra convertible with minor rust damage in the floor. My initial intention was to use the body from my parts car on my frame and repair the minor damage. Being that my project car is one my dad bought new and is a numbers matching 425 dual quad car, It didn't really sit well with me to replace the whole body. Your story and pics have shown me that it's not impossible to use the floor out of my parts car only and retain the original car and heritage. Would you have any advice or tips for me as I start on this? Do you have any more pics of the floor replacement? Thanks, Larry
  18. OK, the form is filled out and faxed away. I will keep you guys informed as to how it goes. :-)
  19. That's awesome! I am going to give them a try. It looks like they also provide the number of a specific car built as well. Thanks for the link!
