  1. Took my 1917 Maxwell out for a ride and I don’t really understand this cone clutch, does anyone here? When I first took the car out I had almost no clutch, it wouldn’t grab until the very top of pedal, I mean the last inch or so. I didn’t horse it but I think I may have been able to make it slip if I had tried. The pedal adjustment seemed just to be able to adjust the pedal to the floorboards. Not knowing what previous owner had done I marked each nut and counted the number of turns to remove it. Each one was 21 turns so I backed off 5 figuring it would make the clutch grab sooner. When I started it I heard a terrible racket and the inspection cover removal revealed I’d bent the studs over like bent nails, guess I went the wrong way? Since it is now apart my first suspicion about the clutch needing relining has proven false. Howard Dennis

  3. Usually nothing as long as you throw enough money at it! I very well may have to repair this but I'd like the option of replacing it with a correct part when I do get it apart. I'm working on a car someone else assembled 50 years ago so the internals are unknown to me. I do know he was a cost no object type person so I was surprised when my maiden voyage revealed a clutch that would barely function. When I backed off on the adjustment nuts trying to get the clutch to take hold sooner, the bolts hit the bellhousing and bent over like giant bent nails. That's why I'd like another factory correct part so I could at least know that was correct as I start my diagnosis of what is not quite right in this set up. Howard Dennis
  4. Help, Tore my clutch up today in my 1917 Maxwell. I need a Clutch Spring Spider Assembly Part # BA 2011. I believe it fits 1916-1917 and maybe later Maxwell's. Howard Dennis

  9. I'd throw them on eBay, they are factory Ford sheet which means a lot to many and not everybody is doing show car restorations so yes I'd say they have value. Howard Dennis
  10. It's a period accessory jeweled dash light cover. Howard Dennis
  11. I read somewhere years ago about someone who poured boiling water into a block several times and it expanded the block just enough to let the penetrant in. Might be worth a try. Howard Dennis
  12. If it is sitting with no hoses on the inlet and outlet there's no way it could have enough water to do any damage. Howard Dennis
  13. Wayne, Thanks for your interest. I intend to let the auction run it's course, this is a once in a lifetime item. Howard Dennis
  14. Stefan, I've tried to make weak or damaged chrome look better on many cars over the years. I usually take some light duty rubbing compound to the chrome and follow up with a good chrome polish. Any pits at all are through the chrome and can't be helped or improved no matter what you do. The good chrome around the pits usually is dull and stained from the rust, that's the part that the rubbing compound can clean and make look a lot better. Once you polish away the dull and stained areas the chrome will look at least 50-75% better. Howard Dennis
  15. Stefan, I could be wrong but I don't think so. Jasco is also a metal etch and I believe it will etch the good chrome that surrounds the light rust you are trying to remove. One site on Google recommends using Jasco to etch good chrome so it can be painted over, I think this is the opposite of what you want to do. Howard Dennis
  16. I have no stake in this auction, I'm just posting it here so possibly a Maxwell owner can complete his car. I searched for years before I found New Old Stock one on eBay for my car. This is only the second one I've ever seen for sale. I know it fits 1916-1917 but it may fit others. 18. First off I've been working on antique cars for over 50 years but have a problem I've never experienced before. My 1917 Maxwell engine had a total rebuild and I put 4 quarts of 30w non-detergent oil I got from Advance Auto in the engine. I've been out of the car hobby for the last 15 years and was very surprised to see the oil come out crystal clear but thought it was something new in the way oil was now refined. Anyone else notice this or did I get some defective oil? Second problem is I can't get this car to stop leaking! Every plug has been tightened to the point that I believe the next step is stripping them and they still leak. The oil pan, wet clutch bellhousing and transmission all have pipe plugs that still drip, the shaft that has the oil level gauge float arm leaks and now all 15 of the oil pan bolts have started to drip!! It's almost like instead of oil I added that gear oil that has the ability to climb gears to my crankcase? Has anyone else seen this water clear oil and had oil leakage problems like this? I'm having sooo many problems with this car that I have never experienced before that my brother recently suggested maybe I needed to perform an exorcism on it! Howard Dennis
