  1. I was so impressed that they went to great lengths to save all the newly discovered signatures on the 1,000,000th Vette. Only had to recreate but a single signature and how cool is it that they found her and had her sign the new part at the unveiling! The Hammer Vette must have made the owner cry.
  2. I saw comments about exterior doors. Be sure you have plenty for escape route in case of fire.
  3. I know what I'm doing and I certainly have done it long enough that my hands know what they need to do. If I have to question what I did last, I probably should not be doing what I'm doing. All my ratchets are set for "stun" unless I'm really mad, then I can re-set for "kill". I automatically set it for the job at hand not what I did 30 mins ago.
  4. Even a 1901 anything was modern then. I love my Caddy and it is a daily driver in nice weather. It's easy to repair on the side of the road with a stick and some old chewing gum.
  5. These cars do not solely rely on painted lane markers (in fact very little), they rely on digital location data from many different devices from GPS to magnets embedded in the road surface. Those lines painted by the road crews will be painted in a special color that vehicles of this type will recognize as a "no-go" zone. Traffic lights will have devices that tell the car what they are doing, not visually like out analog eyeballs. GPS will tell the car it's sliding backwards, internal sensors will already know the wheels are spinning and take appropriate action. These cars rely on communication from devises more that "seeing" Certainly not exclusively but in conjunction with.
  6. Soon (1 to 2 years) I will also be building a new shop. As soon as the stars and galaxys are aligned correctly.I too will have to sell some cars to finance it, then I won't have any cars to put inside! It will; have a metal roof and siding for the snow and less maintenance. I will have snow dams to eliminate snow sliding off where I don't want it to. I can't believe anyone in a snowy area would have them I am going to have 2 main areas separated with a large door in between so I can choose to heat or cool part of it. Sprayed in foam insulation and a million outlets along with air connections every few feet (and a handful outside as well). Along one side will be a pole barn type shed roof for semi-protected outdoor storage. Garage doors on both ends for accessibility. It will also have a segregated wash bay with a lift as well. Overall size is TBD. Depending on my budget, I could end up with a Tough shed. (shrug)
  7. I can tell my sister would argue that point! She had a Asian car (don't care to remember what it was) she Came out of the store to find her car engulfed in flames, rear 1/2 pretty much turned inside out from the explosion. The investigating said it was a malfunction in the in-tank fuel pump that caused it.
  8. MY Jeep is the opposite of that... Mine is definitely a Piece of...
  9. Way back before I was paralyzed, I used to loosen the nut most of the way. Put your knees behind the wheel and push up with your legs. while wiggling the wheel with your hands. This can get it off. Leave the nut on so you don't smack your face when it pops off!
  10. ... so I had to drive my 1966 Cadillac to work. She is always there for me! At least it's a nice day. (I've tried to add a photo, but the uploader just says "bad request"
  11. Driverless systems are already being used in the real world.Google is using this technology for their mapping applications. Slow speed, too slow from what I have heard. See http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/13/us/google-self-driving-car-pulled-over/
  12. I can tell you the my nephew's 2015 Tesla already has autonomous driving. It will follow the lanes, stop at stop signs and impressive collision avoidance system in place. Certainly some of what you mentioned is coming, but not in 25 years, closer to 5 or less.
  13. I remember my dad getting upset he couldn't find anyone to do it, so he taught himself. Give it a go!
  14. Not true, once it's torqued down, the gasket is crushed (which provides the seal and a specific thickness)and will not give the same seal as a new one. They don't become "fitted" It's a personal thing. I prefer to not have to do a job again to save a couple dollars. Gaskets are cheaper than labor.
  15. The question I would ask myself is what does the gasket cost? It that savings worth the effort to change it? (It will never leak in the driveway, unless it not your driveway)
  16. I've had my 8000# rated brand winch bolted thru a plate welded to the front frame and mounted inside an aluminum toolbox for 16 years. I have installed a wireless remote so I can operate it from anyplace I choose. I've pulled many different vehicles (some without wheels) without a problem. As it is mounted inside a toolbox (fairlead mounted to the rear of the toolbox) and the battery is mounted under the deck,it is invisible except the fairlead. It's locked and not obvious so that has been a theft deterrent. I keep my tie downs and misc tool in the toolbox too so it's all safe and accessible. I keep a snatchblock (double) just in case. 1/2 the speed, double the pull. Another use for the winch was when I had a flat and a stripped stud, I used the winch to pull the axle up, lifting the tire off the ground so I could get to a shop.
  17. Not a problem at all, just clarifying. That is a fine example of a well preserved Amphicar to be sure. It's been there for quite a few years. I would get a photo of it above the stairs at least 3x a year when I was President/Webmaster for the Amphicar club.
  18. I was thinking you had found my friends Amphi-Baker. It's a custom Amphicar with a Studebaker bullet nose. He calls it "Finzilla" But I think you meant the Spyder? (in your link) I only saw one Amphicar in that thread. Unless you are saying any amphibious car is an Amphicar. "Amphicar" is the brand not the style. Using "Amphicar" as a generic is like saying Ford when you mean car. (just clarifying).
  19. I sold them a couple of them about a year ago. If you saw the Amphicar on "Fast and Loud" this is where it went as well. They were restored and customized in Minnesota. They have more than 9 of them, maintained by Disney on site. The ADA car (appropriately enough for those who know me) was one of mine. It was the last of 4 cars from the movie with Ted Dansen called "Pontiac Moon". They did some modifications to them for drivability that are fantastic!
  20. I don't watch for this very reason. Knowing firsthand, from friends and family that have been on these so called "reality" shows, it is indeed manufactured drama and basically using unwitting and unpaid amateur actors. I was on "Shipping Wars" when I had a couple Amphicars shipped from Texas. Roy the obligatory a-hole was who they decided should "win" the non-existent auction. I did not partake in the direction or baiting Roy tried. You never saw the show? My episode was VERY short and it does not even come up under searches or descriptions of the episodes because I did not create enough drama for "good TV". (He had a blue gyrocopter in the trailer) I got absolutely NOTHING for my trouble, no discount for working around their random schedule and the associated BS... nothing. A friend was on "Junkyard wars (I'll let him tell his story if he is so inclined) and my sister was on "Clean Sweep" They made her place look like "Hoarders" and the room the remodeled was cheaper than furnishing a dorm room. No quality or craftsmanship as they lead you to believe.
  21. I have thought very hard on what that would take to make work! Done the math and if the opportunity presents itself for a amphibious camper, I'd be all over it! I've imagined what the reaction would be to people seeing us camped out on a mountain lake island. There were a handful of small amphibious campers made for the Amphicar. I do not if any still exist, none are known to have survived.
  22. Here's mine. Will be behind my 66 Cadillac ragtop. It's undetermined as to who the manufacturer is. If anyone knows this trailer, let me know.
  23. Maybe an age, but before a specific year? The vast majority of cars now are built with recyclable materials not designed to withstand the test of time. Soy based insulation on wires will be dust by the time they are 50. Certainly if any will ever be road-worthy or be able to be made road-worthy when they are 50.
  24. I personally think there should be a definitive definition for cars that are unmolested and road worthy and are a specific age. They deserve to be recognized as such and why shouldn't there be a definitive term for them? A loose "it still exists" is not specific enough to be sure. But to say 99% has to be factory is too tight. Certainly the usual wear parts should be excluded, but not things that are not normally replaced should remain unmolested. Tough question to answer, but I think it should be defined at some point.
