    Grinding gears

You'll find the smell of 600W to be unforgettable! In the industrial lubricants trade it's referred to as "Steam Cylinder Oil". Most metropolitan areas have an Industrial Lubricants Supply House listed in the phone book. If the thicker oil doesn't do the trick I would check the adjustment of the clutch and pressure plate. The shop manual will tell you how. It is very easy to assemble these clutches incorrectly. I learned that the hard way! My experience has been with '29-'32 clutches but I suspect the earlier versions are similar.
  3. Restoration Specialties, Windber, Pa. You might need to send them samples if you can't match them up in the catalog.
  4. Not much advice here but I can tell you a bit about the '24 Cadillac V-63 as this was the first antique car we ever bought back in '68. I had a few interesting features. Aluminum body as I remember. Also had headlights that could be tilted downwards by use of a knob on the dash attached to a rod that went to the headlights. There was an air compressor on the transmission as well. Ours had Buffalo wire wheels. Ours was missing several crucial engine parts and we finally sold it to a fellow who had a good chassis and drive train but no body. Nice tall interesting car but as you've discovered pre '31 American Classics generally bring less money than their newer counterparts. I say buy what you like, if you eventually make a buck on it consider it "found money", if not then you've had a bit of fun and could at least hope to recoup most of your "investment".

Use 600W Steam Cylinder Oil, available from specialty suppliers and commercial lubricant distributors (look in your phone book). It is much thicker than the 160W commonly available. We've serviced several Packards such as yours with "drifting gears". It usually solves the problem nicely.
  6. Does anyone collect revived Glidden Tour memorabilia? If so, there is a 1958 Glidden silver trophy on E-Bay listed under 1958 Cadillac. It was awarded to a 1912 Cadillac. It is not mine, I just came across it while browsing.
  7. There is currently no deduction for the use of alternate materials to simulate the appearance of cad. My question has to do with yellow vs silver cad, real or simulated. When was "Yellow" cad plating first used on automobiles? Should there be a deduction for the use of yellow cad (or a substitute) where silver cad was originally used, similar to the deduction for chrome where nickle was originally specified? I would like to see a one line statement in the judging guidelines stating when yellow cad was first used, similar to the guidelines currently in place re radial tires, chrome and plastic valve caps for instance.
  8. Yellow cad plating. When was it first used on auto parts? I'm beginning to see yellow cad on cars from the '30s and even earlier. I have seen some repro Model A parts out there with yellow cad plating. Even saw a 1937 Packard with yellow cad carburetor linkages. The judges manual speaks to the nickle vs chrome question. Shouldn't the use of yellow cad plating in place of the proper silver cad also be grounds for a points deduction on cars built prior to its introduction? In anticipation of the inevitable comment that will arise....I know this subject should more properly be addressed to those who interpret and codify the rules. I have, in fact, brought up this subject numerous times already at the Annual Meetings in various judging schools, seminars etc. I apologize in advance if this post seems argumentative or abrasive. I don't mean it to be, that's just my personality!
  9. It's a slippery slope. If we allow radials for safety purposes then what's next, disc brakes? I have not seen any evidence that radials are any "safer" on older vehicles where they were not standard equip. An argument could be made that radials on older vehicles are actually less safe if they encourage the owner to drive faster. To put radials on an old car to change how the car handles defeats the purpose of driving an old car in my mind. Just my opinion of course and I'm often in the minority anyway.

    Caning

Does anyone have any info on body caning as applied to various cars in the '20s-'30s, for exsmple on the rear doors of '28 and'29 Cadillac Phaetons. How was it done? Like striping, by hand? How is it done today? Thanks!
  11. I'm not trying to change the rule. I'm just trying to figure out what the rule actually is. The 1970 Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Code required all vehicles sold in the US for road use to have a VIN # and set standards for these VINs. I suspect other safety items such as headlights, etc were required as well. My question remains. Does anyone have any evidence that a vehicle without headlights, taillights, etc could be driven legally anywhere in the US in 1970? Sure, the operation of dirtbikes, snowmobiles etc was often allowed thru non enforcement of existing laws but that doesn't mean they were being operated legally. Didn't mean to rile you Dave. The title of my first post on this matter was "Subject for discussion". I still have not heard an interpretation of the rules that would allow a minibike without headlight or taillights but not allow a motorized wheelchair.
  12. I see the argument for dirt bikes being more than just "a bit of a grey area". I would like to see proof than a 1970 mini bike, without a headlight and without a taillight could ever be LEGALLY Operated on public highways anywhere in the US of A. By 1970 weren't there federal guidelines as to what features vehicle had to have before they could could be sold as road legal? PA began inspecting cars, and requiring headlights etc at least by 1931. If you're saying that they were legal to operate because they weren't specifically banned, I'm not buying it. It would be nice if kids were restoring minibikes and showing them, but from my observations this is not the case. Grandfather in minibikes if you'd like, but it would be nice to see a rule that is enforceable and makes sense.
  13. Google Crosley Farm-O-Road tractor.
  14. It was a rhetorical question. I have no idea when Rascals were first produced nor does my Mom use one. The question remains though. Under what theory would a scooter for the handicapped (or a lawn tractor)not be allowed in the class? How about some of those very tiny motorized 2 wheeled scooters now available? Will they qualify when they reach the proper age?
  15. So Mom's Rascal handicapped scooter would fit nicely in 5G ?
  16. You can't rod out a honeycomb core.
  17. In PA it's legal to drive snowmobiles and ATVs on the roads when a snow emergency is declared. I don't care where the line is drawn, I enjoy looking at any motorized contraption. I do go to tractor shows. I would just like to know where the line is!
  18. My question is simple. What criteria determine whether or not a motorized vehicle is eligible to be shown in AACA competition? I always thought it was that any vehicle that was or could be licensed for use on public hiways was acceptable. I highly doubt that a 1965 Minibike without headlight or taillights could ever have been licensed for road use in any of these United States. Please show me a rule that would allow minibikes but exclude Mom's Rascal handicapped scooter, or a Segway for that matter (once they are old enough).
  19. Just back from the Grand National in Kalamazoo. On the field for judging were several "scooters", "minibikes", "trail bikes", whatever you choose to call them. At least three had no headlights, no taillights, no turn signals and to my way of thinking were never street legal. I enjoy seeing these vehicles and don't mind judging them but it did get me thinking. Where do we draw the line? My John Deere lawn tractor has headlights and taillights and is certainly at least as road legal as some of these vehicles. Can I show it? If not, why not? How about Mom's Rascal handicapped scooter? Again, just as road legal as several vehicles at the show. My Son has a John Deere lawn tractor that has participated in a contest of speed. Can it be certified as a race car? Can someone please explain the rationale?
  20. If you can determine that they are the same as '36 we might be able to help. We will be doing some work on a '36 and likely could machine a set for you. Yours might be the same as larger series Buicks and maybe Olds. I doubt that Chev are the same.
  21. Convinced the wife a mini vacation in Western Michigan would be fun, weather forecast looks perfect, dog is booked into the kennel, life is good! Now, if only I am assigned to judge my favorite class...
  22. Nice group of cars, very well organized, beautiful weather, even got to judge my favorite class. 4 thumbs up!
