  1. I'll have an empty open trailer going to and from New Bern from S. Central Pa area...anyone need a car hauled...assuming anyone would want to have a Grand National car transported on an open trailer that distance?
  2. If anyone is interested there is a Whippet radiator emblem currently offered on e-bay under "Overland"
  3. With the cost of restoration beings so high I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my '32 Packard...might be the best way to sell it actually....hmmmmmm
  4. of course you'll have to turn the backhoe over to slosh around that waterglass solution....
  5. Regarding the Maytag washer with 4 wheels and a motor...look at the motorbike class at any large show and you will usually see several "dirtbikes" being judged that NEVER were and NEVER could have been licensed for hiway use....I'm thinking of entering my John Deere 210 lawn tractor....
  6. Standard or Super 8 ? Should be single throat updraft. May have 1, just finished restoration of a '31 840 Riadster
  7. If the doors were blown off racing another car on the way to the show there would be no deduction since we do not deduct for damage occuring on the way to the show ?????
  8. While I have enjoyed this theoretical discussion immensely, being a somewhat experienced judge, I now pose a very real question. I have a "friend" who is restoring a 50's commercial vehicle and is intent on replacing the front bench seat with a new seat from a Dodge Ram pickup with integral headrests and seatbelts upholstered in leather identical to the original. He does in fact have good reson for doing this but wonders what the deduction would be ...Presumably the rest of the vehicle will be "show"...will the seat preclude an AACA First Junior Award?
  9. Just checked, it is indeed Sodium Silicate and is available online from The Chemical Store....$10/gallon...guess my memory isn't as foggy as I thought...
  10. Water Glass was availabe a few years ago at my local True Value Hardware, might still be. It comes as a powder, I believe, and was indeed used to seal and preserve eggs. Knew a well respected engine rebuilder who used it routinely as insurance against coolant leaks in RR Silver Ghost and other early engines. Sodium silicate ?????
  11. Replaced the nylon caged bearings with old stock steel caged design, all is well. Failed bearings were from a major manufacturer, BCA I think, and were what the catalog called for for a '47 Cadillac front wheel bearing. The point is, perhaps we did have them a bit snug but steel would have provided a bit of a safety margin. Live and learn I guess.
  12. As an AACA judge I can tell you that many points are lost at every show due to cad plated plugs before 1956 as well as incorrect hose clamps. Remember, any AACA member can get a Judging Manual and check these details. Plastic tire valve caps prior to 1951 are also cause for deduction.
  13. My question/concern is not about ball vs. roller bearings but rather steel cage ball bearings vs the new nylon cage ball bearings.
  14. We're talking ball bearings, plenty of grease, no brake drag...guess I had them too tight although on a 100 degree day cages that melt at 250 don't leave much of a afety margin do they? Just thought I'd give others a "heads up" to a potential problem.
  15. My supplier, Kaman Industrial, researched Timken, BCA, as well as Chicago Rawhide and tells me all 3 are going to nylon cages...solved the problem by sourcing the bearings from OlCar Bearings but suspect this will become another ongoing problem...any thoughts on how tight to make front wheel bearings?
  16. Anyone have any experience with new front wheel bearings with nylon cages? Installed a set in a 47 Caddy, the cages disappeared (melted) in 150 miles. A check of BCA website reveals that these cages are good for 250 degrees only. Didn't think I had the bearings any tighter than I usually set them..anyone else have this problem?
  17. Can provide phaeton top irons as well as possibly other parts....e-mail me at Penndutchrestore@aol.com

You mean the 1 cylinder 5 1/8 bore by 10" stroke engine I'm restoring won't rev up to 3600 r.p.m. ?????????? Newcomer to these forums, find them fascinating and educational, not to mention entertaining.
  19. Fishing? No, we have the entire car well on with the restoration. In fact have 2 extra jugs and a second crankshaft with counterweights and con rod...weighs 213 lbs without piston..car was assembled with a modern (30's) rear and tranny in the early 60's but we do have the original transaxle etc. Hoping to have it ready to show Spring of '03 if the creeks don't rise..Jeff
  20. Just logged on, surprised to get any response at all re Only. Car appears to be the same one as pictured in Kimes' encyclopedia, attributed to Austin Clark. Name plate on car says "The Only Car..Lopers Brothers Only Car Co. Car No.3 Model F 1909" Body currently with car obviously a reconstruction apparently done in the early 60's. Interested in any and all info regarding possible racing history. Note to Kisselman...restored a '21 Gold Bug..another strange car...thanks guys...new to the forum...enjoying it so far
  21. Restoring a 1909 Only built in Port Jefferson, New York. Looking for any input or info, not much available from AACA, nor Detroit Public or Phila. Public. This beast has a 1 cylinder 3 liter vertical engine, 5 1/4" bore 10" stroke. Can't wait to fire it up.
