  1. The oil seals will fail if the oil gets overheated.

  3. A bad modulator, broken sprag in the torque converter, or problem with the forward clutch will act like that.
  4. The 4T60E is an electronically controlled transmission. It there is a command to shift and the transmission does not respond, a fault code should be set.
  5. This is what happened on one of my 89 Riviera's. Ocasionally on a sharp curve the steering felt like it would let loose due to excessive play. For a split second it felt like you were loosing all control and would wind up in the other lane. I searched for worn steering parts but couldn't find any. Changing the steering rack had no effect. I finally found the culprit when the left front brake pads prematurely wore out. The caliper piston dust seal appeared to have let sand in and was the reason for the piston sticking. The problem went away after I put on a new set of front calipers.
  6. The Bose radio is incompatible as a direct exchange part for the non-Bose because the power amplifiers are located in a different place. In the non-Bose the amplifiers are located in the radio module, not in the speakers. So there is a big impedance difference as well as connector pinnout changes. However you can still use a non-bose if you make some wiring changes and wire the speakers directly from the correct outputs.

  9. I should have stated that I cleaned the hole with paper towls soaked in carb cleaner before using the JB.
  10. I finaly got the dredded E041 monday after 191000 miles. (Original trans still works like new with only periodic oil and filter changes.) So I went to the parts store and bought all of the required parts to do it properly on my time off over the holiday. (Gear and chain set, gaskets, front seal, tensioner, water pump, magnet.) Today the first thing that I wanted to do was to insert the new cam magnet into the new cam gear. I was very disapointed to say the least that the timing gear set that I received didn't have the required hole to insert the magnet into. It was the wrong set. So a second trip to the store was a waste of time because it was closed for the holiday. So I turned on the grinder and removed the flange on the magnet and installed it with JBweld. The hardest part was removing the back side of the old magnet which was still in place. Complete job was less than 1.5 hours. Had to jack car, remove wheel and plastic inner fender splash guards, remove 1 bolt, remove cam sensor, dig out remaining part of old magnet, grind off flange on new magnet, mix JBweld, smear new magnet sides with JB, push into hole, install cam sensor, install bolt etc..... wait several hours. Very easy job.

  12. If there is anything that I could do to assist, just let me know. Have you thought of doing stream dumps to a file while manipulating BCM inputs to gain insight?
  13. My first guess would be the fluid level or pickup o-ring. Second guess would be a failed sprag in the torque converter.
  14. Try black semi-gloss latex exterior house paint thinned with latex paint conditioner to make it flow on smoother. It lasts for years. Just make sure that you clean and prep the surface proprly before applying the paint.
  15. I'm stuck in Tucson because the West Palm airport is closed. I hope that my house is still standing when I finally get back.

  17. I have installed 16 way seats on the passenger side on a couple of Reattas and there are no wiring changes required except to transfer the switches to the right side of the seat. I believe that electrical connectors for 16 way seats were supplied in all vehicles. Some Rivieras came originally equipped with 16 way passanger seats. If your car came originally equipped with 16 way, then you can change the passanger seat frame with a fully motorized frame from the drivers side of another Reatta or Riviera and re-install your original seat covers. Be careful because there are several different seat types. The frames from seats with reversable velcro covers are different from the ones that are not reversable. The switch box will hide the small hole that is in the cover where the single switch was removed. Also, If your car did not come with 16 way seats, then the bolster is different, and the bottom cover will not fit the 16 way seat. If you want it to look completely original then you will have to change the bottom cover with one that has the piece of loose leather that covers the gap between the seat and the bolster. Or add your own. The trick to removing the headrest is that you need to push in the small release with an awl located at the bottom of each support rod. The covers are held on with hog rings and metal rods.
  18. I'm not aware of the chicken gun being used. Iraq has a lot of flying sand which eats engines. Frozen chickens are generally used to test the engines for bird-strike durability.
  19. I have noticed a definate seat of the pants increase in power and response with a K&N that I have installed on my Oldsmobile. The burn rubber test off of the line also proves it and is less subjective. K&N's secret to filtering performance is in the oil. Attempts have been made to duplicate it, but has not yet been accomplished. Experiments with K&N filters in front of jet engines have also been run. Paper filters are way too restrictive for this use.

  23. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to try another radio.
  24. The cradle is actually two L shaped pieces. The left side is generally removed to replace the transmisson and is much easier to replace than the other side. The cradle should be easy to locate because they are identical to the Riviera. Just get one from a non rust-belt state. The difference between the Riv and Reatta is in the cradle to frame mounts. The front frame mounts can be unbolted from the Riv cradle and replaced with the ones from the Reatta, then they will be identical. There is a slight difference between years. Because of the right side vibration damper that was added in 89, the 89 has a small welded bracket for it's attachment.
