  1. What I called the newer style bushings may not actually be newer. They are indeed used on newer cars, but are also used on the 89 Riviera and probably other years as well. On the Reatta all six bushings are the same, but on the Riviera the four back ones are the same but the two front ones are of the (newer) style. The Reatta and Riviera cradles are identical. Go to www.trademotion.com and look up 89 Riviera "front suspension" "body mounting" and view the illustration.
  2. The newer (1993) 3800 rear manifold is constructed of one less part. Therefore the restriction created from the assembly and welding together of the parts in not there. The restriction identified in Paggett's photo does not exist in the newer manifolds.
  3. Anybody know of a source for windhsield correct fitting wiper blades and inserts? Bought some from Discount Auto and they flop around and don't do a good job.
  4. Anybody have the part number for the plastic "bucket" that the upper rear cargo hook fits into?
  5. I wonder if there would be an advantage changing to the newer style. I haven't physically tried, but it looks as though they will fit.
  6. Not much new info here. It is a newbie textbook that decribes the basic operation of the cars intellegent electronic systems. Not much more here than what is contained in the service manual. No information on the communication protocols. No tables. Nada nothing zip.
  7. I read somewhere that they were anodized.
  8. There is no temperature sensor located on the converter.

Anybody have a factory cell phone that they want to sell?

    Took Car To GM!

What were the symptoms and indications of the original problem?
  13. The repair kit contains the top section of the mast attached to a new nylon cable with a stainless attachment end.
  14. Transmission control units here: http://www.tciauto.com/electronics/ http://www.sratrans.com/fasttcu.htm
  15. You can buy a repair kit for about $12.00 from GMPartsDirect.com
  16. The 88's do not have the antenna wire in the rear window.
  17. Are you sure it is the car and not you? A stress irritibility caused by a physical ailment such as a cold or flu or ilicit drug usage could manifest itself in this mannor.
  18. An answer to my own question: 1988-1990 3800 165hp@210lbft n/a 1991-1993 3800 170hp@220lbft n/a 1991-1993 3800 205hp@260lbft s/c 1994-1995 3800 170hp@225lbft n/a 1994-1995 3800 225hp@275lbft s/c 1996-____ 3800 195hp@220lbft n/a 1996-____ 3800 240hp@280lbft s/c
  19. I didn't quiz GM about the e control but I did inquire about one from an aftermarket source. They said that they were selling for about $1000.00 but they have been discontinued. The transmission behind the vin 1 supercharged engines is a beefier 4t60e (mn7)than the standard 4t60e which is stronger yet than the 440t4. It would be a direct bolt in without modification but what good is the power if you can't use it. I guess that one could ponder about swapping internal componets between the two transmissions. Where is the free engineering support when you need them? Any way the 4t60e is like new and reliable and the 440t4 is on its last leg and needs to be rebuilt. Torque load is what limits the longevity of the trans. Does anybody know what the max torque ratings are for the 440t4 and the 4t60e(mn7)? How about the 88-89 3800 and the 93 3800 series 1? If the max torques are the same but the added horsepower rating is derived from moving the max torque into a higher RPM range, there may be hope. Padgett, what could you accomplish if I sent you the 88 and the 93sc proms?
  20. The backup light response was to your indicating the need for a micro switch.
  21. Your transmission should already have a switch built in for the backup lights. My guess would be that the switch grounds to turn the lights on. I don't know what the computer wants to see, but it may be simple or require a relay.
  22. It just so happens that the 93 SC engine uses the same three valve egr configuration as the Reatta 3800. Both use the same connector. I don't see a problem here. From what I can tell, the exhaust head pipe bolts up to the rear exhaust manifold without modification. There is a difference in the number of wires in the oxygen sensors that needs to be resolved. I have the 93 SU prom but not the ECM. The ECM commectors were melted from the fire. Pondering about the location of the second ECM. Possibly can locate in the console. I would like to use the air filter housing and ducting from the 93 or maybe from the 95. Relocating the relay center will be necessary if this is to be accomplished.
  23. I dropped a complete engine cradle and strut assembly out of a low mile 93 series 1 supercharged 3800 Oldsmobile 98. The interior of the car was burned to a crisp but under the hood was un-touched. I made a few relevent discoveries relating to the supercharged engine swap. My first thought was that it sure would be nice if I could just bolt the new cradle and all into the Reatta. But the Reatta cradle bolt spacing is wider and won't line up. This means that the original cradle must be retained. The steering rack appears the same except that the new one does not have the electrical connector. There is a threadded plug that can be removed to instal the switch. I believe that the Reatta front lower motor mount will bolt onto the engine block after the air-conditioning bracket is removed. Need to use the Reatta A/C original bracket. The rear transmission mounts will have to be fabricated for the 4t60e. The new engine and trans is about 1.5 inches wider. It will be a tight fit into the cradle. The upper dog bone mount will have an interference problem with the egr valve assembly because GM relocated it from the rear to the front of the engine. The original drive axles fit into the splines on the 4t60e transmission. But the trans mounted shift lever position switch is electrically different. The 4t60e has two connectors and the 44t4 only has one. The trans front mounted connector is also different. The Olds has beefier 11 inch brakes as compaired to the 10 inch Reatta ones. It appears as though the brake and strut assemblies may interchange, but the Reatta top strut support bearing will have to retained so that the holes line up. The new springs have more coils. The ABS wheel speed sensor is different and has a different connector. I think that the wires can be spliced to make it work if the number of pulses per rev are the same. If they aren't the same. maybe the rear ones can be upgraded so that there isn't a speed discrepency between front and back. The tricky part is the computer. The computer looks the same as the Reatta except for an added connector. A leap of faith is telling me that the extra connector is for transmission control. I need a 93 manual with schematics to tell. The best way would be to make the new computer talk to the bcm. This would probably take an engineering staff to make happen, so it is unlikley unless Padgett is really that good. For now I'm thinking of using two computers with the inputs shared, the original controling everything but the engine and transmission and the other controling the engine and trans only, but there are many ifs. How will the new computer react not being connected to a bcm? How are the signals from the shift lever used in the transmission control? etc...
  24. Not sure what it has. It was cheap enough to take a gamble. When it arrives I'll let you know.
  25. I took the plunge and ordered a book on BCM / PFI Electronics 1986 Buick Riviera. http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=94478189&AID=7134924&PID=832016 Maybee I will learn something.
