1. In Texas, a friend of mine loaned his car to a friend he was helping out. The guy was a bit of a loser and eventually stole the car...eh borrowed it anonymously...and headed out of Houston. A month later it was found half way across the state, badly abused, filled with trash and nastiness from having been lived in and used...well, you get the picture. It was returned and the insurance cleaned it up but the guy waltzed into Houston a bit later and was never arrested. When confronted, the police said once you give a person permission to use your car, they cannot steal it, or at least it is impossible to prove. The moral of that story is NEVER, EVER loan your car to ANYONE. I will never understand it....like the cop who said the guy who held a loaded shotgun to my chest was not threatening me because he did not tell me he was going to shoot me AS he cocked and pointed it at me.
2. Hi Wayne! It sounds like that guy is doing the same thing most people do. Taking advantage of a situation. It isn't that different from speeding or telling a fib. In Virginia it is obviously a serious misedemeanor....here in CO it isn't one at all. The question is, would any of us do something like that? Or do we obey the rules? ... all of them? Do you feel strongly about not driving your classic except as defined by the law?
3. Thank you, all, for the great information. This is a wonderful place to learn new things. Happy New Year to everyone! I just returned from the mountains so I have not been on lately.
4. I plan to work on the '47...put in a new carb, redo the front end and FINALLY install that new exhaust system so it stops sounding like a tank! I'd like to do a little work on the '77 Eldorado too but we will have to see how the money comes out.
5. No, quad-headlights were not legal before 1957 however, I do remember the design department coming up with some special models that had the quads in 1955. We won't know without the VIN but it is possible this was a gift to Richard Nixon which was shipped to South America. And I do believe cars sold in foriegn countries did have quads as an option...but I will have to check on that. More as I dig it up. Great pictures, Tommy!
6. Oh OK...thank you! Like I said, it looks really sharp! As Dave Kenny says the chrome of the Korean War era was bad...I know that from some of our Chrysler products from '52...so I guess that is one of the ways you can work around it. It is very appealing though. Dave, I appreciate your enthusiasm...I would love to have a '40s Packard to nestle beside my Cadillac. I was impressed with the car I saw. Maybe someday...I have several cars I would like to own! And Packard is the other marque I'd choose.
7. I have really enjoyed reading through this page and like the Packard marque a great deal. Had I the money, I know of a 1950 Packard I would love to own...however...getting back to the subject, I have noticed some Packards with painted grills. My question, and pardon my ignorance, is was this a Packard option or production item? I think it looks very sharp and was curious. Cadillac did that during the War Years but out of necessity. Thanks and Happy New Year to Everyone!
8. Very cool, Stude8! Thank you for sharing. I wish my uncle were alive to see this one. He loved racing.

Leveling system ?

Brian, what the heck is a "Chebbie"?
10. Hi Marv, I have put two rebuilt water pumps into my 1947 Cadillac and both seem to seep from the shaft just a bit. I am careful to lubricate the water pump per the manual every 1000 miles but I am seeing a little standing water in the catch under the piston behind the pulley. Is this normal or should I be looking for another unit? Do you carry water pumps for the '47 flathead 347cid V-8? Thank you!

Leveling system ?

I can see that...but one of the things I love about my '47 is that it sits high. I can see the entire road and still be at basic road level, unlike my old Dodge 4x4 where I sat even higher. That car will be a real killer when you get it the way you like it. I am looking forward to seeing some pictures of it sometime, G. sorry I have no technical help to offer...just wanted to put in my two cents.
12. Bob, I just saw your new Imperial's pictures...that is a very handsome car. Congratulations!
13. Wonderful thread, guys. I have always named my cars...its a family thing I guess. My current ones are The Flying Dutchman or Dutch for the '47 Cadillac, and Tiffany for the '77 Eldo Biarritz ( as in Breakfast at Tiffany's...I think of Audery everytime I see that gold paint). And my 1981 Chevy C10 is George, as in Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men", because he is simple, tough as nails and reliable.
14. Oh I am SOOO embarrassed. There it was...staring me in the face and I missed it. Thanks, Chuck. I will contact Tom and find out when the January meeting falls...or springs or something.
15. Can anyone tell me if there is one like this in the Denver area? I have checked the roster but have not received any responses. I would like to become more involved in the club. Thank you in advance!
16. Just to bring you all up to date, I have received the materials and am now reading through the manual. I am looking forward to getting more involved in the CCCA. Thank you, Chuck, for the information and suggestion!
17. Ken, I would love to hear about your VW. Is it a type 1 or 3? I had several including a 1960 VW Beetle (black and grey) as a kid (OK so my PARENTS had it ), a 1978 VW AutoBuss - one of the best vehicles I have ever had, and a 1974 VW beetle - which some wonderful youth in their exuberance burned to a crisp in Dallas before going on to burn down a house. My parent's 2000 VW Beetle is a great little car but is only remaniscent of those previous cars in value and hardiness. Oh and you have those wrench problems too?? I buy tools and parts to go happily repairing only to give money to my mechanic to fix what I did. Hey its the effort that counts, right? Thank God of kids like my son who knows what he is doing and keeps Dad away from the tools!
18. Not having served (4F) I often wondered how life might have been different had I been able to do so. Was ending the selective service a good idea? The discipline and experience in civic mindedness may have helped many to grow up to be better citizens, though I have not seen any real psychological or sociological studies on this matter. But I wonder if having to serve in your country's military did not make for better adults. I am just thankful for those who have chosen to serve and done so with honor. Their service should never be forgotten. Funny old world...seems like those that have served, men I know personally, have too often a common bitter experience in the last 20 years. Is that just crabbing or what?
19. Hi Rod, I can help a little with the documentation. I have had excellent luck on eBay finding original and OEM reprints of all of my '47s documentation. Also there are several good auto document printers out on the web. Try Facon Auto Literature at : 1-800-458-2734 or fax 909-786-4166 3901 Carter Ave, Riverside, CA 92501 Check out Hemmings Motor News too. They have a website and a publication that lists all sorts of vendors and parts lists by marque. You can pick one up at a local Barnes and Noble. As far as forums go, the AACA, CCCA and Buick Forums are the best I have dealt with in my short time in the hobby. Most folks cross-forum and own several vintages of car. Try GOOGLE search for parts...I have found any number of small groups or vendors for Cadillac parts that way. I am sure other members will have more information for you! If you have not yet done so, join one of the clubs like the AACA, CCCA or Buick National Clubs...they are tremendous sources of help and parts. WELCOME! We are happy to have you here! Hope that helps a little!
20. Hi Craig! Freuliche Weinachten! How is the '47 coming? I thought I would bring this to the top and see what progress you have made.
21. What a beautiful Eldorado, Bob!!! I would love it...unfortunately I already bought mine. sigh. Too little room, too little time...anyway, tell us more about it! Have you tried the CLC Forum? They have a Buy/Sell section too. Cadillac LaSalle Club Buy/Sell Let us know how it goes! Good luck and A Very Merry Christmas to you and yours! BTW : Those are some magnificent 1959 Buicks! Simply wonderful!
22. Happy Holidays and many, many Happy Returns on the New Year, Peter, to you and your handsome family! And the warmest best wishes to all the members out there in AACA Land! Felice Navidad!! Freuliche Weinachten! from the Colorado McGrews : Randall A. McGrew, Pat C. McGrew, and Jonathan E. McGrew
23. Wonderful news, Peter and all of you serving on the forum!!! Congratulations all the way round!
24. John, I would go online and tell them this in direct terms. That is the worst mis-information posing as fact. The History Channel is fun but the programs it shows are more often than not either wrong or so seriously flawed in an attempt to engage the public that they might as well be completely wrong. Side note : My father is a modern historian (19th Century Russia ). He has watch some of these shows and just shakes his head. Watch it but do so with a great deal of scepticism. I use it to pique my interest in a subject, then I do my own research. Please never take what they present as fact. Just my .02 cents worth...
25. I don't know brass era cars from sheinola but if that were Sitting Bull, could that be a Cadillac? I had read he loved the 1909 Cadillac he used to ride around in at the Big Show. Of course I do not see the famous script on the radiator so I am probably wrong.
