1. I'd like a couple of all weather car covers...or a new front end kit from Kantors. I'd wish for peace on earth, good will towards men but that one has been returned postage due so often, why bother?
2. Great job, Tim!!! I just added that link to my technical files. I wanted to put a set of Goodyear Ragatta IIs on the '47 (with tubes) but I was going to have to go black wall, and even then I'd have that ugly Ragatta II on the sidewall. If I cannot widen the white this way, I might be able to remove the lettering. I will see about getting a couple of old ones from my friend at Goodyear and try it. Thanks a lot!!! Great post!
3. I agree with everything that has been said...it is all true in its context. One thing I try to do when I read a post or am asked by a member on whether or not to replace their XYZ engine with a crate 350 and a TH400 is to consider what they have. In almost every case the original engine, if running and in relatively good shape, is an excellent power plant and should be maintained. Rebuilding a 346 Flathead V-8 will cost about $3200. A well built new engine is over $5K. Anything less would work but be a waste of money and time. If they decide to go ahead and modernize the car, then please keep the engine and tranny for the next person who takes on the car. I understand if the car is a hulk and is rebuilt to modern specs for enjoyment of its original looks alone, hot rodded etc.., it is at least out on the road giving enjoyment to its owner and admirers. But in my humble opinion, there is nothing quite as sad as a functioning example of a classic car that is chopped or modernized without regard to its provenience. I recently saw a 1947 Cadillac 6269 sedan, like mine, that had been 'modernized' with all new steering, engine, tranny and suspension. The interior was near original but for the 1978 Cadillac steering column and wheel, and the modern pedals. It was a beautiful job....but it was no longer a 1947 Cadillac. I have no idea what shape it had been originally so I cannot and will not judge what was done or why, but I can say my heart sagged just a little to realise one more brother to my car had been lost. A silly sentiment really but there it is.
4. If you could poll DMVs for the 50 states, plus our protectorates etc.. then you might get an accurate count of all registered vehicles. That will leave unregistered projects out...you could then poll the clubs or use an internet voluntary questionaire to pull in some of those (+ or -). Oh pooh....I didn't read Peter's reply. I really am behind on this one!!! Hmmmmm I have to admit...I would be interested to know this information. Good thread idea, Ken_B!!
5. Only if it includes Cat-illacs That is an amazing number....I wonder how that would compare to the number of automobiles on US roads in, say, 1938? Oh...you were being funny. Ha ha ha....you were SO funny I forgot to laugh.
6. Welcome, Jim! Good to see a new member here! Nice catch I wonder, Jeanne....do you hand out prizes for sharp eyes? By the way...I just got my first issue and it was wonderful!! I really enjoyed the article on the Nash/Rambler.
7. SO.....HAS anyone seen or heard of an H2 stuck in the snow???? I guess being snowed under by the weight of its cost and the interest rates counts. Could be wrong....NOT!
8. I will be surprised if we see 10" but they are supposed to get 12" in the mountains. But as John said it is early yet. The air is crisp and smells so clean. I cannot imagine what it is like to work in that garage in weather like this, John....maybe Santa should bring you a forced air heater for Christmas??
9. Reminds me of when we lived outside of Philly...in Langhorne, PA. Dad would commute into Philadelphia on the train to Temple where he taught. We thought nothing of riding the Pennsylvania RR into Philly or up to New York City for a day. It was a great way to get around. I hated driving down the Sure-kill Expressway...Route 1 was a total loss too...but I managed and thought nothing of it. Speaking of snow....it is snowing here and is beautiful. Temperature is at 32 degrees and everything is turning white. I have my window open for the wonderful fresh air! I love winter!!!!
10. My Grandad McGrew served as a machine gunner in the trenches of France in WWI. He survived, which was a miracle in itself. My Uncle Ayers, Grandad's adopted son, served honorably in the Army Aircorp, 7th Corp, out of Pearl Harbor as a Captain in MI. He saw action all the way up through the Phillipines. He told some stories but not many...it was too gruesome to remember. My Father's cousin Tommy fought in France as a tank commando. He survived too. I remember them now that they are gone, both for their service, and bravery, but mostly as members of my family who I knew and loved. There are too many to tell from the past...but keeping them in mind keeps them alive.
11. Sky...my ex had to have the heat at 75. It was abominable!! I keep my house at 68 and leave a door or window open. Loving the cold and living in Colorado makes sense!! But if the population out here keeps growing, I may have to move north to Wyoming or Montana. It's starting to look like New Jersey around here!!! (Love New Jersey...not a slam. Spent some of my best years on the salt barrens and roaming through the country side. Just too many dern people!!!)
12. That's about right, Diz. You need to reduce the size of the pictures to be less than a Megabyte. I generally use JPG format, and a file size of about 45%. The quality may not be the best but it loads.
13. Wonderful sentiment, Greg! And very true! SUXs...eh...SUVs are not necessarily good in snow just because they are large, and powerful. I would take my '77 Eldorado against one any day of the week in snow. But most of all...it is technique and driving ettiquette that wins the day when driving, whether snow ladden or dry! Please be careful, safe and well mannered out there!
14. Ah it is now so very clear. Oddly enough we have this problem throughout the field of archaeology. And often, highly respected men have turned out to have made up stories and falsified sites to support vague theories. I know several first hand. It is a terrible shame such things happen. You are right, B.H., I would (and am) insulted by this kind of fraud. I remember seeing a link here to the proposed V12 or something like it and it appeared to me to be as you all have described it, a faked (and badly at that) set of photos. The fact that this person can continue to swindle the members of several clubs is a sad state of affairs. Isn't it amazing how ego will keep otherwise intelligent, capable and honest (partly) men from acting with honor? While embarrassing, I would rather get it over with and have a reputation for recognising I had been flim flammed than substantiate and support a lie. Thank you for your indepth appraisal of this situation. It has been a great eye opener.
15. I understand the nature of this problem, friends, but I am not clear why it is causing such a dust up. I have read the entire set of threads so I do have a history on this. The article was clearly a work of fiction by the author. It was presented as fact de facto, a mistake by the editorial staff. I am not a member of this club nor an owner of a Packard, but as a car lover, and a writer I would like to know why this has caused you all such pain. Lies and secrets only cause hurt and ill will....the clear light of truth will set the mind and spirit free and give the soul peace.
16. Hi there! Well....the answer to your question is that yes it will work, and yes it can cause problems. Sediment in the tank, along with condenscation can foul up the fuel lines, filters and engine. You could try putting Dry Gas in to handle any water accumulation but it might be wise to drain the tank and clean it. If you decide not to do that, then only run it down to 1/4 tank, and fill it again. If the tank has not been cleaned in its life time, especially after sitting, I would not let the tank run below a 1/4 tank. Hope that helps!! By the way, PeterG can re-establish your old ID. I can no longer do that for you or I would set a temporary password which would let you on. If you like the old ID then I would request that. Otherwise have him delete it and use this one. Thank you!!
17. I should add a picture of my garage to this....I can fit my '47 Cadillac sedan in but to do so, I have to clear the floor of all extraneous stuff, back the car in and angle it just so, then jack up the frontend and slide a couple of dollies under the front wheels. THEN we PUSH it on the diagonal until it is in far enough to close the door! No quick get aways here!!! For now I simply have it under the porch overhang. My son is the brilliant space engineer on THAT one. He squeezed an 18.7 foot automobile into a 14 foot long garage!! Brilliant!
18. Stanley, my son, now 19 ( he had a birthday a couple of days ago) does the same thing. He uses his 1972 Eldorado or the '67 Mustang...and soon will be driving the 1970 Dodge Charger once he has finished working on it. He has been driving cars like this since Junior High School and working on them too! Talk about walking to the beat of a different drummer!!! Does your son have an interest in the Classic Car Clubs? What does he think of older people and their experiences? Are they considered valuable? The reason I ask, and maybe others can help shed some light on this, is that Jonathan and his circle of friends (both here and in Texas) all shared one common thread, if not interest. They feel the experiences of age are worth no more than say book data and that a different point of view has no more value than their own opinions. This is COMPLETELY contrary to my own views and upbringing, and try as I might I cannot instill that sense of respect. I thought this was a failing in our parenting until I realised it is endemic to the youth that he has been and is exposed to. Some of it is being a teenager, I suppose, but it is pervasive. Neither he nor those of his friends interested in cars feel any need or reason to join the clubs. Has anyone else seen this attitude in knowledgable, intelligent and otherwise mature young people?
19. Congratulations on your being published, Ron. I am looking forward to receiving my copy. Feels good, doesn't it?
20. OUCH! That hurts just reading about it! I was tuning the old flathead v-8 last month in preparation for the winter, and just forgot that it was idling. It is really quiet. I leaned into the compartment to see the timing mark and rested my hand on the cast iron head. YYYYYYUUUUUMMMM! Its not bacon...its Sizzlean! That was an owy I won't soon repeat.
21. Great job! Thank you for the response. The exhaust system on my '47 was put in strangely so on every bump, the pipe bounces on the frame making it sound as though the floor were falling out. I thought I had a real problem until I climbed under and realised what it was. Does Kepich have a website? I might do as you have done and rebuild my own.
22. JT, I would hate to promote ignorance or misleading/questionable/wrong information. Too many would read it ad hoc and give it credence where none is justified. What I was trying to say is that each national/international club has a defined purpose and foci. One needs to recognise that, enjoy it for all that the club has to offer, and if the club does not fit our personal needs, be more diverse and be a member of different clubs to match our interests. One day I hope to own at least one antique pre-war car. But for now I have a CCCA Full Classic, and a non-Classic 70's car that is a beautiful car non-the-less. By being a member of several clubs I can learn and participate in several universes and that is both exciting and rewarding. So it matters not whether my '77 Eldorado is acceptable to the AACA, or the CCCA...it is to the CLC. We should not take it personally if our favorite car does not fit in a club we wish to participate in. If you broaden your own views and experience, you get more out of it. And there are innumerable local groups for just plain hanging out and cruising that are relaxing too. That was all I was trying to say. Just an opinion I thought to share.
23. Tommy, did you have to weld anything? How did you get it to stay in place...I have always noticed that shops like Midas weld the pipes together, etc.. so I was curious how you put it in. Thanks.
24. Sorry. You are right. Ignore the man behind the curtain!!
