  1. Just to be clear, reporting only what is found printed or described in authentic factory publications of the period. The information reported is not the author's opinion. People are permitted to accept or reject what is printed, however the facts reported are not conjecture or "semantics", simply the reporting of the actual words printed in the factory publications. Also, please note the statements are not directed to or intended to explain, correct, or contradict what Riker (any one of the three of them) may have reported. Anyone may express any opinion or interpretation which he may desire, which is the license of the First Amendment.
  2. Are you quoting Riker senior, Riker junior or Riker junior's junior?
  3. Former Mark J Smith Locomobile. Very special
  4. Ooops. I should quit earlier and go to bed. It is indeed listed not as a runabout roadster, but a raceabout roadster
  5. A Gunboat was a production body. It was a four passenger body. The boattail is a body listed in the 1915 Custom catalog as a Runabout Roadster.
  6. Are copies of these documents extant?
  7. Did you know that an L-head mercer is just tin? No real wood inside the body, simply tin shaped as it looks.
  8. Man that is a fine looking machine going together! Great stuff! Thanks for sharing.
  9. This car was located in Sea Girt New Jersey over 50 years ago and no longer looks like it does in the above photo. It was restored and converted to a Torpedo using an entirely brand new authentically reproduced body. It is now spectacular!
  10. You are one accomplished mechanician! I wish I lived next door
  11. Off the cuff thought, doesn't the 48 have script "Locomobile" on the top water plates, 38 does not?

    1920 Mercer Limo

The fenders are identical to those of Locomobiles of the period. So is the front bumper. Perhaps the body was made by LeBaron (a/k/a Bridgeport Body Company) the body builder for all stock and certain custom Locomobiles.
  13. Found this ad for a 1911 baby tonneau. Interesting features for a 1911. Alan?
  14. If your car is fitted with flat pulley (not a pulley with v shaped sheaves) and a fiber timing gear, then the serpentine belt will eat the timing gear teeth down to nubs in no time. A flat leather belt slips when the tension becomes greater than the gear can take.
  15. "With the added option of before and after cleaning results, cigar optional of course" now you're talkin'!
  16. Woe, what is that Red Beast of a machine? JR
  17. --Peter WoodLondon UK1903 Cadillac Model A Alan, I have heard tell that the pre numbered plates were purchased in bulk by the licensees and therefore the numbers and dates used are not connected. Cadillac maybe that is not true but for other cars maybe that is accurate. It is certainly logical. Thank you for your considered opinion.
  18. George, great piece. What is the source? Would you send a copy of the cover to go with the above for us to shamelessly flaunt.
  19. The reason is the old plugs are glazed and clean off. New ones are not glazed, carbon up and foul. Once fouled a new plug is toast. Take apart plug can be cleaned with a pen knife or razor blade and re-used forever (our life spans that is). With big smokey, (my fav Franklin) I always bring a good cigar on tour for the times when I snuggle up with my spark plugs and engage in some quality spark plug cleaning time
