  1. Dave, I'm actually going to the The Waltham car show (Metz vehicle’s to be featured at 2023 Prewar / Brass Era vehicle event in Waltham October 22, 2023.), next weekend. If you didn't know, it's an annual thing, featuring many Metz automobiles. I'm told there is a swap meet, too. If I see a head there, I'll snag it, and if you still want it, GREAT! If not I'll have a spare! I won't be looking to profit from this. Also, this will sound to good to be true BUT, I'm currently in the process of replacing the valves/ guides in my own 1913 Metz 22 Special. I'm currently away from home but, I'll be returning Monday, and I'll send you a comparison pic. with the ModelT head gasket overlaying the block. In the mean time, I have 2 images for you. One, is of my Metz, with new valve guides installed, and my Neway valve seat cutter install, and ready for action. The 2nd is of T block, taken from the T forum.
  2. Ford actually changed to a deeper head, beginning in 1917but, there may be some overlap during that model year. Look up pictures of the low head vs. the higher head. The most obvious difference has to do with the appearance of the water outlet placement. So, to answer your question, 1917 to early 1920's. Also, in case you are interested, the reason that the engines are so similar is that Metz poached 2 of Ford's early engineers. They made minor adjustments to various dimensions, design, etc. to just sufficient an extent to avoid patent lawsuits.
  3. Dave, with regards to the similarities between a Model T's head, I can tell you this: They are so similar that a Model T's head gasket can be used on your Metz 22! Only one of the center holes needs to be slightly enlarged, to make it a perfect. Some older fella's on the Model T forum say that T owners used the Metz heads, because they are a little deeper, and therefore, cool better. T's use bolts, instead of studs but, that's ok.....you just have to spin the nuts further down the studs, and they'll appear to stick up more. You'll need to use a T water outlet. SAVE YOUR METZ 22'S water outlet for when you get a new Metz 22 head!

  5. I'm currently working on my Metz 22's engine, and I've encountered a MAJOR obstacle! THE fiber laminate portion of the gear is completely gone, and the steel portion of the teeth has significant wear. Does ANYONE out there have a suitable replacement? I'm from the Detroit area but, I'll be in Waltham, for the car show, the weekend of October 22. HELLLLLLLP! PLEASSSSSSE!

    Who Owns A Metz?

    rferg98, do you still have that pile of parts? If so, roughly, where are you located, and what are you asking for them?
  7. I'm wondering if any of you folks might know what valves can be used to replace a Metz 22's valves WITHOUT machining the block. The stems on my 1913 Metz 22 are .310 dia., vs. a T's .312. A T's valves are longer, which can be dealt with. However, the heads of my Metz 22's valves are exactly .050" undersized, compared to a stock T's valves which may be a deal breaker, without machining. Do any if you fine people have a thought or solution for this? My Metz currently has all of it's original 2 piece valves but I'm going to have to replace one or 2 of them. Perhaps, one of you has some extra, usable, Metz 22 valves laying around? HELP!!!!
  8. Thus is 12 years later but, for anyone who us asking thus same question, I just bought a very late 1913 Metz, that I believe hasn't run for over 60 years. The engine is blue. However, the water inlet bolts are absolutely chewed up. Somebody tried and failed to get them out, and painted blue over the damaged bolts. So, was this engine originally blue? Who can say BUT, there are significant traces of drippy BLACK paint on the back of the intake.

  11. I just bought a 1913 Metz 22 Special. It's nearly complete but, one of the few things that I'm missing are those chain guards. I sure would like a copy of your patterns and those pictures of how they are installed, if that offer still stands! Scott Ford
