  8. A.J.: The spec's list 37.5 hp at 2400 rpm from the 182.5 cu.in. four. For 1925, Hupmobile introduced their E-Series straight eight: 65 hp at 2700 rpm 246.7 cu.in., a more acceptable engine for a ~$2K car.
  9. George K: I don't doubt that's right, most of the modifications listed in the Ritch text were developed to overcome the engineering shortcomings inherent in the H-Series V-12. Lincoln Continental owners were desperate to get more performance commensurate with the elegant, sporting looks of their rather heavy luxury cars, or at least make them less problematic. I'd opine dry lake racers regarded the H-series V-12 as an inexpensive, possibly better alternative to the ubiquitous Ford flathead: something that would deliver high speed on the cheap. Everyone knew the L-Z V-12 was essentially a Ford flathead with four more cylinders. By the 1940's and later, junkyards were loaded with Lincoln-Zephyrs to source engines and their transmissions. If someone blew up his V-12 motor, there were endless supplies of junkyard replacements. Even Lincoln-Mercury dealers were glad to offload obsolete H-Series parts and used engines when the Lincoln EH and EL V8's became available. Steve
  10. It's an engine that was readily available but not generally well regarded or thought as a performance powerplant: H-Series Lincoln V-12. Being relatively short-stroke (3.75") in the long-stroke era, they could withstand the higher rpm operation. The 1942 and partial 1946 engines were bored to 2.9375 for 305 ci. which produced 235 ft/lbs torque at 1800 rpm. By the shadow of the carburetors, it appears as if this engine was fitted with an Edmunds dual carburetor intake manifold. There is a section in the back pages of the book The Lincoln Continental by OCee Ritch describing various modifications to wring more performance out of those engines. The most extreme is over-boring the block to 3.0625 and inserting sleeves for any cylinder wall opened into the cooling system or possibly too thin.
  11. The black convertible coupe with the maroon top is a 1922-'29 Rolls-Royce Twenty. Companion to the first Silver Ghost, then New Phantom. They were a small OHV 190.9ci six-cylinder, 129" wb. It was an effort to compete with other premium English carmakers, to fulfill the growing demand for smaller, yet still high-quality motorcars.

  15. Definitely parts car! The most valuable parts unique to the 1957 Packard Clipper Country Sedan are the wide trim pieces on the tailgate and inside quarter panels. Even more valuable is that plastic emblem insert in the license plate light, a segmented design used only on the 1957 Packard wagon, changed for 1958 which is also unique to only that year. The wheel covers are 1958 Packard only parts as S-P changed Packards and some model Studebakers to 8.00 x 14" wheels.
  16. Remember, the 1940-'42/'46-'48 Lincoln Continentals are primarily about elegant proportions, not about performance. No one should expect too much out of an H-Series V-12.
  17. Has to be a 390 V8, the standard powerplant for full-size Mercurys. Most casual sellers don't seem to know a lot about the spec's for the cars they're selling. If this Mercury has been consistently a New Mexico car, it pretty much assured that its mostly rust-free, might actually clean up rather nicely. The optional air conditioning was $430 added to the $3,116 Montclair 'breezeway' sedan. It also has tinted glass, power steering, power brakes, automatic transmission, power seat, AM radio, padded dash and two-tone paint. The dealer must have made a few bucks on this sale. Given the distances between towns in New Mexico, this has to be 121K miles.
  18. It's a 1957 Packard Clipper Country Sedan, Body Style no. 57L-P8, production: 869 with the front clip from a 1957 Studebaker. With the 1956 financial distress that resulted in the Curtiss-Wright "Joint Management Agreement", all production was consolidated in South Bend and the closing of Packard's Detroit operations. Along with the 1957 Packard Clipper Town Sedan that was based on the 1956 Studebaker President Classic sedan, the 120.5" wb Y-Body, to fill out the selection was the Clipper Country Sedan, 57L-P8 was added. In spite of being on the verge of bankruptcy, S-P had finally developed a four-door station wagon, 116.5" wb P-Body for 1957.

  22. If it's like most Northeast old cars, the road salt stuck on the driver's boots created rust holes in that patch of floor...even when the rest of the floorboards stayed solid.
