  1. Is this not a Ford A? It is certainly worth something. Easy restoration or just get it running and use.
  2. OK, I think I have this car figured out. By 1907 there were 7 years of broken cars to rob parts off of. The front axle and wheels on this car are similar to many of the early cars, the frame is ash and the rear end could easily be adapted from any number of cars. I say adapted because you can see a small square box surrounding the axle from the side view of the car. The drive shaft runs between Rays legs. There are two radius rods that run from front of frame to back of frame on each side of the motor for strength. Several saddle cross members run across the frame to support the motor and controls. The motor uses a standard 4 cylinder crank but with two rods per journal. There is a center main which explains the jug spacing. The cylinders are simple jugs with no water jacket and valve cages in the top. Crankcase is cast aluminum. The crank and cam and valves are most likely out of the same type motor. Oil was put in the motor before crank up and the rods splashed it around inside to lubricate everything but the oil would be forced out of the motor as the pistons pressurized the crankcase on the down stroke. This plus the lack of cooling made the motor "blow up" after each run. The large pedal under Ray's right foot is the brake, the other is the throttle, and the final pedal would be to pressurize the gas tank. By robbing parts from different cars and those junked, Ray had very little money invested. The piston size is small, perhaps no more than 2". This plus the size of the flywheel would allow the motor to turn RPMs quickly. We have to remember we are very early in the racing circuit. Later on there were wrecks and people died and some people stopped racing. I remember doing some pretty stupid stuff when I was younger but as I realized the potential consequences, I got smart. I am amazed at the simple engineering that went into the making of this car.

  4. I was looking for what I thought was a standard piece of 3/4", one that lips down over the edge of a piece of 3/4 mahogany plywood dash, like restoration supply sells but have come to realize there is nothing standard in this hobby.
  5. I have no idea what this came off of but it is for sale if you need it. The neck is threaded inside. It is 28 & 3/4" Long x 13" High x 13 & 1/2" Wide. Notice the heavy metal neck, gauge, and mounting. It has some pinholes and will need coating. I'd love to hear what it came off of if anybody recognizes it. It came out of a collection that also had several Rolls Royces and I've wondered if that's what it came off of.

    I know there's not much to go on, but can anyone identify this cowl? It appears to be off of a wood bodied/metal skinned large car. The firewall was wood right up to the metal skin.The metal skin does turn down 1/2" over the firewall. This part is also for sale if anybody sees something they can use. I would like to know what it came off of.
  7. What I don't get it is how a guy like Ray Harroun could come up with the money to build this car. It is 100% shop built. I understand the idea of raising capitol and I guess it is just a matter of being well connected. I heard where someone has set up go fund me pages for the laid off government workers, who only just now missed a paycheck, and has already raised a substantial sum of money and they will get back pay once this is done. I guess I don't fully grasp the generosity of folks.
  8. OK, I have gone back over this information and am convinced the frame rails are Ash. The motor is most likely Harroun' s own design. It is overhead valve with atmospheric intake. There are no fins for cooling on the cylinders. The magneto is gear driven off the front of the motor. The front axle is most likely Weston Mott. The wheels are bicycle with bicycle tires. The front tank has to be gas, though you wouldn't need that much gas to go 1/4 mile. The fly wheel is way light for the period, which means, the motor would be able to turn up RPMs rapidly. I'd like to build this car but I already have something similar under construction.
  9. Hey there, are you trying to reproduce this racer? Have you figured out the motor? I don't think there was a transmission. There is a model D schebler carb between the cylinders. It is direct drive to the rear wheels, probably with no differential, and bicycle wheels. If you had the motor, it would be an easy build. The car didn't have to steer; it just had to go straight. Did you notice the size of the flywheel? The steering is gear driven. The yokes at the end of the front axle indicates traditional steering. The sprocket on the outside of the rear wheel is a skip link bicycle sprocket Men in those days always wore ties. The racer was pushed off to start and probably raced from a running start. There should be further information on the web. There is a guy in England that racers a replica racer using a period motor. His car has no differential. It would be a neat build. One last point, the subject of this thread really should be changed to reflect the subject.
  10. Probably unlikely but a White had steering wheels like that. I helped pull one out of a barn a few years back, a 1910 or 11 G, and the steering wheel spider was aluminum. This car has the same profile steering wheel and looks aluminum.
  11. Hey there, anybody have a piece of the brass trim that surrounds the outside edge of a flat dash they have removed during a restoration laying around their shop? What I'm looking for is a beat up corroded piece that someone thought not good enough for a proper restoration with the original patina still on it.

If you know the previous owners name, you might find some information in the transportation dept, that is, if he ever had a title.It is possible this is the motor makers attempt at going into the car business. The date seems more reasonable. An earlier car would have brass inlet and outlet pipes. Trucks used gas lights way after cars were converted to electric, which would explain the forks for gas lights. I don't believe this is a made up car; it looks factory to me. Hope someone can help identify it.

  14. I can't believe anyone would abandon this car, whatever it is. It is a very early car that has gone through a restoration in the recent past. Those tires look good. It must be relatively rare as no one here has identified it. Somebody needs to move that car inside and clean it up. It obviously is abandoned. Just my opinion.
  15. I think these coils can still be bought new through Ford model T suppliers. The early T's used this box. They also turn up on Ebay.
  16. O.K. I have this double spare tire carrier but I can't figure out the bracket stuck on the back of it. Did it bolt to the frame side? This seems reasonable but it doesn't seem to be set up right. Anybody recognize it? Is it aftermarket? I got it with a bunch of Studebaker parts.
  17. I would like to get this Wagner model K96 Serial number 4F distributor into the hands of someone who could use it. It is used and the bottom gear (pot metal) has expanded from moisture but I have a replacement. It has some rust on the adjustment arm but otherwise looks good. It has not been cleaned up. (no points) $100 Picture available

  19. This book is 56 pages of instructions for the 1916 Maxwell but it has seen better days. Top left corner has been eaten away completely by some varmint of unknown description. It has some nice illustrations and briefly covers all major parts of the car. Very useful for owners and priced reasonable at $15 obo.
  20. I have one 25" Firestone type E rim I'd like to pass on to somebody looking for one. The rim has surface rust.
  21. I'd like to tap into this wealth of Duesy knowledge/history. My great uncle was a chauffeur for a man named Fownes from Pennsylvania. This man had a house in Pinehurst and wintered there. He was a big golf nut and designed a course in Pennsylvania. He had two Duesenburgs, in one he installed a speedometer in the back seat compartment so he could monitor my uncle's speed. I've always wanted to track down the cars my uncle drove but the Museum has no knowledge of a Fownes owning a Duesenburg. The golf course/club still exists in Pennsylvania and all the family pictures belong to the club but I haven't been successful at getting anyone to do any research. Do any of you guys know of a Duesy owned by a Mr Fownes of Pennsylvania? As for me, I'd take the car just as it is, just to own a Duesy.
  22. Craig and others, The flywheel is not attached in a professional manner. It has a long bolt screwed in as if the flywheel was temporary to get the motor running. Also, the cam was built up on one side using babbit, as if the valve timing was a bit off and it was adjusted. This plus the lack of markings indicates to me it was somebodies first attempt at making a motor. I have not fiddled with it much as I don't want to lose the original patina. I bought a 3/4" Schebler but haven't attempted to run it. There could be a name behind the flywheel that I cannot see. The head has fins to cool it but the cylinder is water jacketed with dual ports both sides. Any help with identifying it is greatly appreciated.
