  1. hello bernie this is the first time ive replied to your posts,i watched the restoration of the dixie flyer daily and now i watch every post on the packard,my mentor in the automotive trade once told me theres people that can and will find something wrong with everything, the hell with those people, its people like you that give us all motivation to do the impossible,as far as the cars go if it wasnt for you some cars would never get restored,i commend you for your energy , abilities and the driven spirit that we all should have, please keep up the tasks at hand, and keep restoring the impossible, your saving the would be scrapped projects and showing us all that the impossible is not so impossible, bernie if im ever lucky enought to come to australia i will make a point of meeting you just to shake your hand, dave
  2. hello everyone i have a question about early driving lights, ive seen the lights on big classics that turn with the front wheels, for the life of me i cannot remember the name of these,my question is was there any such lights that turned with the wheels for the lower priced cars either single or pairs, probably in the 1928 to 1932 range, something that would look right on the low priced vehicles, dave
  3. hello john, what a find i think you love teasing us just to see how high are blood pressure will go,big fan of 30s convertibles both coupes and sedans, what great projects, hope theyll get to someone who will restore and appreciate them, keep them coming while i wipe the droll off my keyboard, dave
  4. hello everyone i want to thank everyone for there replys ,thank you motoring icans for your tip on trans ocean, ive contacted them and am waiting for and estimate at this time, this may just be a pipe dream but im going to follow it as long as possible, i havent told the wife yet about the devaux,i figure its better to ask for forgiveness than permission, shes always been great about the cars but the economy has taken such a toll on us the last 5 years she may have reservations, any way proceed with caution, ill let everyone know the outcome as i know ,again thanks to everyone dave
  5. well said trim a car,i believe they keep it together by any means possible, thats ok they do save it, by the time we gt it we hopefully can improve the previous work and do it right as possible, either way some rare cars are saved and we can make them right once they get back home dave
  6. hello everyone the reason for saying that the buying shipping and resto was going to be more than the value was a reply to a private message,i was asked if it was going to be worth it,the answer is no its not going to be worth it,ive done restos in the past and have never made money,im trying to swing the deal because i want this type of vehicle, its a 1932 devaux cabriolet convertible,i saw one at harrahe about 1970 or so and have been looking for one ever since,i think the only person who makes money is the resto shops and im sure its hard for them to make ends meet, if they make anything there very lucky,i believe they do it for the love of the hobby and not to buy there beach house in hawaii, will keep everyone p[osted on the outcome, will post pics when i receive them dave
  7. hello everyone so far its great advise, as far as the car being worth it i doubt it is,its in very rough condition,i am waiting on more photos at this time, ive been looking for this particular car for a long time and its finally appeared,i dont thing the cost of buying it and restoring it would ever be a break even but its just something i want, will keep everyone informed of progress, thanks dave
  8. hello everyone ive been talking to a genleman in argentina about a vehicle purchase, has anybody imported a vehicle from argentina to the u.s.,looked on the computer but not much info regarding duties and taxes and other hidden charges, this is an unrestored car thats dismanteled if that makes any difference, any body with experience on what to watch for, hidden problems, thanks dave
  9. hello ive talked to both myron & howard reike at hershey a fiew years ago they said there wasnt much info from the factory, what i need is probably a 1932 or 33 national service manual with the devaux info or maybe some old continental manuals showing the 40a or 40aa engine, the engines where devaux only, in 1931 they said hall on the side of the block,in 32 when continental took over they removed the hall but both where 40 a engines,my 31 has the hall my 32 and the extra 32 motor both do not have the hall but are both 40 a motors
  10. hello everyone, i am starting the restoration on my 1931 devaux, does anyone have repair manuals on the engine, its a continental 40 a, im told continental used this engine in the late 30s in the massey ferguson tractor rebadged as 40aa,have had the car along time but theres little to no info on major engine specs or any torque specs, any and all info appreciated, thanks dave

  13. hello i remember mikes yard in gardena,it was called classic cars at that time,it was more of a wrecking yard that sold antique and classic cars and parts,it closed as i remember late 60s or early seventies,i believe mike moved to the midwest somewhere,i believe most of the good stuff was auctioned off and the rest scrapped,i remember a burgundy ruxton in the show room with red interior, alot of auburns and packards,as i remember rudolph valentinos packard phaeton was there it had been in a garage fire but was very savable,as far as records go i imagine they went with mike justdave

  20. i know this is a stretch but does anyone remember a story about someone pulling a 1935 buick 60 series convertible out of hillside auto wrecking in west virginia some time in the 50s,my dad owned this car and sold it,after selling it he regretted it and started hunting it down,in the mean time the family moved to michigan, while back on vacation somewhere about 53 or 54 my father found the car in the yard but could not reach the owner, his brother was supposed to follow up but didnt, about 6 months later my father went back but the car had been sold, pops died last year and i always told him id try to find out if the car had actually been saved or not, would appreciate any thing anyone can remember,i have no vin or liscense number but the vehicle was registered either to gasper enrico jr or to the enrico coal mining company,,thanks dave enrico
  21. hello everyone, this car looks great to me,i myself cant afford low mileage originals to restore,i always say anyone can restore a very nice original but it takes hard work and determination to restore the basket cases, but maybe its because im a junk man at heart,if this vehicle is for sale id like a shot at it,please email me at daves place 2010@yahoo.com,again my comments are from a junk mans heart, dave
  22. well guys i guess i was just dreaming,i thought it would be a good thing to help get everyone together on this but i guess it was just a failed attempt, personally if i do find cars i will continue to let folks know i guess im a little backward on this one, good luck to all dave
  23. thanks huptoy, this is what i mean, these old treasures are still out there, lets get people motivated on letting each other know where there at ,theres no secret agenda,if thats what people think ill gladly send my 5.00 and then step out of it,if i knew where there was and auburn or an amphicar id gladly let you guys know as for more cars i have 2 devauxs and a moon roadster i cant buy any more cars i just hope to live long enought to see these get finished,i still believe theres alot of good people and good cars out there lets get em together,if your afraid the old farmer will get angry then dont tell about that one,but also the old farmer may get just as angry by leaving him out of the loop,i believe if we get together on this it will be positive for all dave
  24. hello everyone i was thinking about starting this thread for awhile, lets all get together and try and find those hidden cars, the ones that have been started restoration and never finished, the one setting in the field or the old garage or barn, the one you know about but dont tell anyone because someday your going to buy it ,in reality everytime theres extra money it goes for something else, and the old hidden treasure just sets, maybe we could all donate 5.00 a piece and the winners can share the pot, maybe winners like who told about the most cars or who found the oddest vehicle who purchased the not for sale car, whatever,i know theres alot of cars out there i believe it will help the hobby help us make new friends and stimulate the economy a bit, maybe the older person will sell the vehicle and have his roof finally fixed,or the fire hazard electrical repaired,i just think alot of myself included know about these lost treasures and dont tell, lets get together and get these out and into the hands of the people that will enjoy them, maybe steve can collect the money from each and everyone of us and then split it however many ways possible, may help get your own vehicle a little closer to completion, any thoughts from anyone, dave

    Buffing

hello regarding the buffing,im kind of old school, but lately ive been using a material called a clay bar,i use it with soapy water in a spray bottle in the shade, rince the car real good or a good washing then rub the clay bar over the paint surface, youll immeadiately feel a difference in the finish, rub the whole car then rewash it and look at the finish if its acceptable if not reclay it then wash again,at this point use a good liquid wax and some old fashioned corn startch, apply the wax and while the wax is still damp dust the corn startch on top,its alot of work but youll be happy when finished,in my early years at the body shop (late 60s) i had to do all the black cars this way, they said it was called paying my dues, ive used this on my employees since but they all felt it was a punishment, dont be surprised if you dont get it done the same day its hard work, any detail supply or automotive supply store will have it , dave
