Water Pump Lip Seal

I remember seeing some information about a particular type of lip seal to use in a water pump, but can not find it. Can anyone remember the particular type of lip material that should be used in water pump applications.

What year and which vehicle is the pump for?

If you're asking about the water seal behind the impeller, as on a modern pump, the seal is likely a ceramic water pump seal.

I am looking to replace the water pump packing on my '15 truck with a lip seal. It is a non pressureized system. I remember someone saying that there is a seal type that I think started with a v. Just can not find it in the posts.

Typically, automobile water pump seals are rotary "mechanical" seals, even on non pressurized cooling systems. (or packing). I have never heard of using a lip seal for that application... but there is a lot of stuff i have never heard of.

i will be interested in seeing if someone can answer Larry's question about successfully using lip seals in auto water pumps.

You don't need any exotic material for that in an open system.

I've done what you want to do and it works great as long as the shaft is smooth and the bearings are good.

Rather than using one double lip seal I bored out to accommodate two, GOOD quality, single lips seals.

I recently fitted a lip type seal to my '15 Buick CX24. I got the seal from my local seal supplier after asking for a seal for a water pump. I believe the seal is common but the lip spring is stainless steel to cope with water.

I put 2 single lip seals into my Metallurgique pump.

I have thought since that maybe I should have put some twine and waterpump grease between them as insurance but so far no leaks.

It is interesting to hear that lip seals have been sucessfully used in water pumps. You are never to old to learn.

Over the years I have found one seal works better than two. The reason is the second seal runs dry.
