Guest 70 Electra
Just now saw the post on Jim....very sad to hear this, but releived he's doing better. Jim was one of my first 1970 Buick "friends" when I bought my 225 convert about 7 yrs. ago. Since that time, I've only met him in person twice, but spoken on the phone several times, and emailed with him dozens of times. He sold me many parts I needed, and offered much excellent advice. Before I got my own parts books, he was also willing to help out by looking up a number or application. Jim is a fine guy, and a credit to the BCA and the hobby in general! The Old Guy
I met Jim at one of the first BCA meets in Flint. He was showing his 49 wagon. I always considered him one of the most knowledgeable members of the BCA. I am gld to hear that he is doing better, and will also say a prayer for him. JohnD1956
First of all, I never met Jim, but I do wish him and his wife well. Not to hijack this thread, but Serb on the other hand has finally been released from re-hab ( no, not that kind!) and is home. You may not know but his home was in the damage zone from that freak Buffalo snow storm while he was laid up, so he may be out cutting wood as we type... JD
Guest imported_MrEarl
and heeeerrrrrrrrres Serby, Hey gang,I am now home. I was released on Tuesday. It was a long haul, I had the operation on the28th of Sept, went to the re-hab place on Oct 1st and got out on the 17th. Way, way too much time. For those that may not have heard, I had a full right knee replacement. When I got to re-hab I had a set back for a couple of days which was blamed on the amount of bone they had to saw out of my leg along with a bunch of tissue. I leg was about twice it's normal size and the color was a deep purple. The pain was more than 2 pills every 4 hours could keep under control. After a couple of days off of my feet, loads of anti-biotics and having fluid drained from the knee, I was able to start rehab again. My 3-5 day hospital and 5-7 day rehab turned into 20 days. I am home and now attending rehab on an outpatient schedule on Tue and Thur for 2 hours. The leg swelling has gone down quite a bit but I still can not get the range of motion that I need. It will come with time. AT any rate, I am home where the water is hot in the shower instead of warm and the towels are soft instead of feeling like sandpaper. That does not even address the food or the other amenities. That had to hurt. uhh, how were the nurses Serb? Guest imported_MrEarl
Thanks for letting us know this sad news Greg. I had just yesterday came across Jim's name associated with the Chicago Chapter in some of my old 1972 Bugles. Am I correct in saying that he started the Chicago Chapter. He was certainly a great contributor to the Buick Club and will be missed. Please extend condolences from us all here on the Forum to the family. How is his wife and daughter? I bet old Buicks ride heavenly on them streets paved with gold.
Centurion
I received an e-mail today from Gary Klecka, BCA #1955 in Alaska. He wrote initially to tell me that it was 52 years ago today that his 1955 Buick Roadmaster was delivered to its original owner in the Chicago area. He subsequently learned of Jim's death, and here are his comments:

Quote:

Today, I found out some very sad news. Jim Schilf died. He was my Buick Club ?mentor,? since he was responsible for me joining the Buick Club in the early ?70s. It is ironic that I learned of this on the ?birthday? of my Roadmaster. I will blow my 4 horns in my Electra tonight in honor of Jim?last July, he gave me one of the four horns that I needed for my Electra. Here is the e-mail I received today from Jerry Bodden:"Its with deep regret that I forward along the passing of our long-timefriend & Buick PAL, Jim Schilf."As I recall, Jim was the founder of the Chicagoland Chapter, BCA.; startedwith an ad in the Trib - 'anyone interested in Buicks, meet @ BillStillwell Buick'."Please keep his wife, Rose & children in your prayers."Sadly,Jerry Bodden"

BUICK RACER
Greg, thanks for sharing this info on Jim, my brother and I met him, probably 20 some years ago, at the Buick Gran Sport Club Nationals in Bowling Green, KY, he was driving/showing this car: and it was breathtaking, with bucket seats. The car was crashed and met it's demise, but my brother got the black interior bucket seats from him. Jim will be very, very much missed by all of us that knew him, he was a great Buick guy and a great friend to all of us, I miss him already, but glad I had a few colorful minutes with him in the Swap Meet this year at the BCA Nationals in Rochester, MN. God Speed, Jim, Love ya, and will miss you very much,
NEW1966
He loved that Wildcat and used to talk about it alot. He also had owned a 1966 Skylark. Not even a close replacement for the love he had for the Wildcat, however he told me on many occasions thathe liked the quick little Skylark. Since I had one with 19,500 original miles, it gave us some "common ground" even though his love was for Full Size Buicks. It was my "66" that brought us together. I learned alot from Jim about Buicks and Parts and will always owe him for the wealth of knowledge he passed on to me. He reminded me of my Uncle Erv. Buick All The Way and NO Compromising.Jim could be a bear sometimes, but deep down, I would say he was a real good guy. I have observed these Buick "Old Timers" for years and I have to say, everytime we lose one, part of the Buick Love goes with them. As Jeff Rottmann(Jim's Buddy) said to me today, "I Fricken Hate It"!Rest In Peace JimGreg ThomasBCA # 11974
dkbuick75
It is indeed a very sad day for all Buick lovers with the loss of Jim. I have been very fortunate to have known and worked with Jim at various Chicagoland Chapter activities over the past 15 years. Yes, Jim was very instumental in the founding of the chapter. He was its first official "Director".Over the years Jim has been the person we always counted on, along with Steve Kelly, for handling vendor registration, organizing and running any swap meets that were hosted by the Chicagoland Chapter. If Chicagoland was in charge of either a Heartland Regional, BCA National, or the annual BOPC swap held at Du Page Co. fairgrounds, Jim was always there, to make sure the people in attendance had a multitude of parts and vendors to choose from while trying and locate that "one much needed" part to finish that work in progress. Jim and his wealth of Buick knowledge will be deeeply missed by all who knew him. All of us in the Chicagoland Chapter extend our deepest sympathies to his family. God must be restoring an old Buick and needed his help and vast Buick knowledge more than we did. Rest in peace "PalBuick"Don AdamsBCA # 21957Past DirectorChicagoland Chapter/BCA
