Seeing those wipers standing up made me remember these things have vacuum wipers.

Would be nice to know 144 or 170 engine.

Also thought they all had rubber floor covering. Doesn't appear to be a deluxe trim level car.

Is that a dent in the tailpanel on passenger side of the gas cap, or a reflection?

The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975, edited by John Gunnell list only the 144 ci six as the only engine available for both the 1960 and 1961 Comets.  No 170 ci is listed as optionally available for either year.   The 170 six appears for 1962 when Comet becomes Mercury Comet and the intermediate-sized Mercury Meteor list the 170 as its base engine.   Then, the 170 ci six is listed optional for the Mercury Comet at $45.10.

Looks like a dent to me, Rocket.

I love the unloved four door Mercury's and compact cars (of all makes) from the early sixties, but a large part of the appeal for me is the lower cost of getting into one. If this car is worth $6700, then I'd extrapolate that my V-8 powered '61 Monterey is worth something like $10k - $11k...and I really don't think my car is worth that kind of money.  Maybe I'm wrong about this Comet, though. We'll see what it brings and how fast it brings it.

Just a Falcon with lipstick and perfume, in my opinion.

Are the tail lights leftover '60 Edsel parts?

Although the 1960-'61 Comet taillights look to be recycled 1960 Edsel units, the shape and length is different so are not interchangeable.  The Comet was the Lincoln-Mercury dealers savior since the sales of both were badly down from their mid-'50's highpoint.  Comet doubled sales volumes instantly, while Mercury stagnated after being demoted to fancy Ford status again and Lincoln began its slow climb from the depths of the 1958-'60 debacle.  Ford Motor Company management never could consistently decide what Mercury was to be, vacillated between fancy Ford and cut-rate Lincoln dependent upon who was in charge.
