Talarico8447
I have a 1940 Buick Special 248 c.i.d. I'm currently working on detailing my engine compartment as it left the factory. Did the choke heat tube come with heat insulation on it? Or not? Is there a book with reference photos? What's the consensus? Thanks.
CarNucopia
There was one on Bring a Trailer that was implied to be original. Maybe the photos from the auction can help? https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1940-buick-special-2/
Talarico8447
Thanks for the link. That car does have the tube insulated. Maybe a Judge of these cars can chime in here and shed some light on this.

kgreen
I just got a new addition to the library; it’s an original master parts list for 1928-1940. The answer appears to be no choke tube insulator was used. non is shown, page 73-A 1
Daves1940Buick56S
Every one I have seen has the insulation wrapper
kgreen
We may not have a definitive answer for you @Talarico8447. My search of the parts manual finds photos of the heat tube insulator on the V8's but not the straight 8's. Here's a shot from a parts manual that covers 1928-1954, again, no mention of an insulator earlier than 1953:
