Yes you can.  When I replaced my alternator, the shop I sourced the alternator from actually did the swap for me.  If I remember correctly the new (might have been rebuilt) alternator was still in the Delco-Remy body, and exactly the same size/depth of the one coming off.  I think it was from NAPA.

Yes.

 

Lately, I have been getting some alternators that are clocked wrong.  Check the new one to your old one to make sure the terminals are clocked the same as the old one.  Otherwise, you will not be able to get it installed or adjusted due to the terminals hitting the brackets.

If there's an auto electric shop in your area, look into having them rebuild your current alternator. I've found a local shop often takes more time and care on alternator and starter rebuilds.

 

If you get a rebuilt unit from a parts store, my rule is make them test it in your presence before you leave the store with it. Nothing more irritating than buttoning up a job and then finding you have a bum part.
