What is the best type of muffler

G’Day 

I was wondering what type of muffler people would use on a 1925 Buick standard six? 
the one I have is a straight through muffler with the padding stuff around the out side of the internal pipe 

The second photo I tried to get a view down the pipe .

It depends how far you want to go and how much you want to spend for authenticity. Your old muffler appears to be one made for a truck. Modern car mufflers are flat. But your old Buick probably had a round one to begin with. I would buy a round truck muffler of the appropriate pipe size and let it go at that.  If you have a choice, and the room, get a longer one for more silencing.

What is wrong with the one you pictured? I would use it if it wasn't too loud.

If you go on the Walker muffler website they are all listed with the specs - sizes etc. Pick one you like. You can order a NAPA one - same numbers.

These folks will make one using your original muffler specs. They made one from my 1922 Chandler and its worked out great.

One that makes sense. I see these youngsters driving junk mobiles with loud mufflers that are supposed to sound like racers, etc. Clown cars. But if you're driving a solid piece of muscle, your exhaust system should sound like it.
