Blueabbott
I recently obtained some early vehicle parts and I believe that this is a 1917 era Oldsmobile V8 engine. It is not complete, and was stored in a shed for many years. I also have the transmission. 1
sagefinds
I looked in the big Crestline Olds book and there are some pictures of the early V-8s but they're not great. From what I can see, yours looks more like a 16 than a 17 or 18 based on the way the headers come off of the exhaust manifolds but don't take it to the bank. 16 was the first year as you probably know. 1
DFeeney
I would be interested in this if it came up for sale. Don 740-816-4284 central Ohio
John E. Guitar
That's a Northway V8. They were used in a few different cars. I've got one out of a Cole. It's an interesting design with a block that splits in two. The Cole version had separate intake (aluminium) & exhaust (cast iron) manifolds. I think Northway changed to a centre mounted water outlet in 1916 or 1917. Can you locate the serial number? Its location should be marked in the first picture below. Can you take a few more photos, in particular of the front engine pivot? 1
kfle
Northway V8s were different depending on the car. Cole’s version was completely their own design by Charles Crawford as shown in the post before my reply. Northway also manufactured Cadillacs V8 and Oldsmobiles V8. All three were different engines and Coles was the largest. That one does look like the 16 Olds as mentioned and I believe they only had two main bearings. I can’t recall though if all of the Olds years used the smaller 2 main bearing design. 1

Dandy Dave
Been there. Done that. Can't remember? 🙃 It does look similar to the 1916 Olds I worked on many years ago. The finer details however have faded with time. However, here is a link to some photos of one that was up for auction a while back. 1916 Oldsmobile Model 44. https://www.classicdriver.com/en/car/oldsmobile/model-44/1916/188388 Edited May 18, 2023 by Dandy Dave (see edit history)

Blueabbott, thank you for taking the photos. The motor I have is missing the items on the front of the timing cover so it's good to see what should be there.
