oil can? This looks old, does anyone know what it was used for?

My grandmother had one that she used to lubricate her treadle, sewing machine. I'm sure as Terry points out, they were sold by    hardware stores to lubricate anything that requires oil. Back then anything such as fans, electric motors etc. had an oil port.

Yes, 46 woodie has nailed it correctly.  These are known as "sewing machine oilers."  Very common.  Handy to have one around the shop for getting just a drop of lubricant into a tiny space.
