I was gonna say the autoharp was very popular in the Appalachian region of that time period.

They got the country music craze started un 1927 ("Mother") Maybelle on guitar, her cousin Sarah on Auto harp and Sarah's hubby "A.P." (Alvin Pleasant) Carter as the scowling patriarch. He took ancient, traditional mountain tunes, tweaked them, had his wife & her cuz record them and took the credit for writing them! He did save a lot of authentic folk songs from obscurity though.
Studemax
Mother Maybelle strumming the big archtop. I can't identify it, she usually played a Gibson L-5.

Yes, an L-5, from 1928. She had that Gibson for 50 years. https://www.tennessean.com/story/entertainment/music/2017/04/01/maybelle-carters-gibson-guitar-precious-jewel/99683186/
30DodgePanel
Sorry for getting a bit off topic but do you guys prefer the sound of Gibson, Guild or Gretsch arch? Recently I picked up a nice sounding Dean mahogany dreadnought and getting back into it and was really eying a Gretsch but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I don't know the differences between the three main arches though, Gibson, Guild and Gretsch. I know some of you have good insight that I hope you'll share with us... I'm mostly focused on playing bluegrass and Mark Knopfler / Emmy Lou Harris sounds if that makes a difference Edited February 28, 2021 by 30DodgePanel (see edit history)
