DB26
Hello everyone. I have a pair of vacuum operated turn signals from the 1920s. It consists of two vacuum cylinders (one for left and one for right) that extend outward and light up to indicate a turn. I’ve posted about them on this forum before. I will post a link to my previous post when I get home. Anyway, one of the cylinders had badly worn leather seals and I did the stupid thing and removed them thinking I could substitute in O-Rings. Well that didn’t work and now I’m wondering who I can go to or what I can do myself to repair these seals. Thanks Edited March 7, 2020 by DB26 (see edit history)

DB26
Thank you! I will contact them. here are the photos: Here is the cylinder Here are the springs that kept the seals pressed against the inside diameter of the cylinder Here is where the seals were. There were two of them, one for each direction of travel. The end was sealed with cork.
padgett
I've used cut off inner tubes to seal vacuum canisters before. Do you care about appearance ?

For leather cup and/or flat seals.....................Bob I contacted them through email Monday and haven’t heard back. I sent them a quote for the following custom up seals. Just today I figured out how to disassemble my piston in order to get dimension readings for the new seals. Here it is taken apart. Turns out they are threaded: I need cup seals with: ID of 1/2” OD of 1” Thickness of approximately 1/32” or 1mm Height of 5/16” Edited March 8, 2020 by DB26 (see edit history)
DavidMc
Agricultural supply shops usually have some of those leather cup seals, they are used in water pumps and sprayers. Worth a try if your other source fails
mike6024
Could you use the rubber type used in brake cylinders, like these, and cut a 1/2" hole in the center for the ID.? Edited March 7, 2020 by mike6024 (see edit history)
DB26
That could work. I’ll keep that option open.
