Dave Phillips
Hi, I’m just putting my C38 flathead 6 cylinder back together and in the workshop manual the tappet settings are with the engine hot, how much do you guys add on for setting them when the engine is cold. Thanks in advance
A. Ballard 35R
As you probably know, the tappets expand by different amounts which is why it is always better if at all possible to adjust when hot.
viv w
I normally set them with one to two thou extra clearance on assembly and then reset them to correct clearances when hot.
c49er
Add .002" cold....That's what I do on all the MoPar new flathead rebuilds... Then...adjust them HOT... Depending on year/model .008",.010" intake .010",.012" or .020" They must be adjusted hot as a final adjustment..
