27donb
From the 2005 BCA judging manual: "Engine sheet metal parts from 1922-1935 were painted Black, including valve cover, spark plug cover, hot water return tube and fan. Push rod and water jacket covers were painted engine color, as were the pans. Pre-1926, the combination starter-generator was painted engine Olive Drab. Starting in 1926, the separate two-unit starter and generator were painted Black." My question is, what color should the cast iron water pump be, black or engine Olive green? Hubert_25-25
Don, From everything I have seen, the water pump should be engine color. The distributor seems to be black or engine color. I am a little on the fence about the color for my 1925 Standard Starter generator unit, since mine is painted black inside and out. But the book says engine color for the starter generator color. dracenroc
I agree with Hugh. All reliable engine pics from this era are showing a engine color painted water pump. Will mine paint engine colored too.
27donb
My water pump and starter generator appeared black or maybe Grey. The S/G was original green after I cleaned off all the dirt, oil and grime. The pump was black over blue over red primer, so I really had no clue. Thanks Hugh and everyone who replied, not too many of us mid 1920's guys around with knowledge to draw from!
Leif Holmberg
27donb.I have never found any primer on my 1920 Buicks engines at any time. And I have had at least 10 engines 1922-1929. Leif in Sweden.
Hubert_25-25
Don, Leif is correct. They did not have primer. There is no primer even under any of the automotive sheetmetal paints on my car, not just the engine. I don't know when they started using primer. Thanks for the comment on the color of the Starter Generator being green. Also my picture shows a PO must have wanted the pump to match the blue engine, before the pump was topcoated black. Thanks to you both!
Erndog
Should the 1930 Engine Compartment/Engine colors be the same as the 1929 colors? Those are listed in the judging material, but I can't find any info on the 1930's and it seems every one does it differently.
