Marty Roth
That would be a beautiful stable-mate for our 1954 - but we are out of garage space.
John_S_in_Penna
Here's some helpful history from the forgotten pagesof Consumer Reports--their May 1955 Auto Ratings issue:The 1955 Cadillac Series 62 was rated a "Best Buy," andwas the highest ranked of the 7 cars they tested in the"High-Priced Cars" category. From the text of the 1955 review:"Cadillac's gas mileage is probably the best in the group....Cadillac's frequency-of-repair record is the best of ANY CAR. [Emphasis added.]The Cadillac is an extremely well-made automobile, with exceptionally highresale value, and it has no serious faults."While no car is perfect, the review overall was positive. The 1955 Lincolncame in second in the group, and the 1955 Buick Roadmaster came in last. John_S_in_Penna
The 1955 Packard (not the Clipper) was 6th out of 7 of the"High-Priced Cars" reviewed in that Consumer Reports auto issue. The review referred partially to their review of the Clipper Custom in the "Upper Medium Priced Cars" category, in which the Clipper was #4 of 8.Here are a few excerpts. The reviews themselves had much more information."...Virtually the same engine as used in the Packard Patrician," they wroteof the Clipper Custom. "It is a brand new engine and appears to be a good one."They praised the torsion-bar suspension, which "keep the car very level in thefore-and-aft direction, regardless of road inequalities; it rides beautifullymuch of the time." They mentioned the car's auto-leveling device, and questioned itscomplexity as "something more to get out of order, as it did on Consumer Union'stest car." "Low gas mileage...the frequency-of-repair record for Packard-built carsis poorer than average, and resale value has been low."As for the regular Packard, "The engine of the Packard is the same as that onthe Clipper Custom, but it carries a higher horsepower rating and uses dualexhaust pipes. The Packard also has a heavier frame....CU's rating commenton the Clipper Custom applies in general to the Packard. The upholstery andtrim of the Packard reflect its higher price; it is questionable whether, for most buyers, the sum total of Packard advantages over those of the Clipper Customare worth the $900 premium."The A.A.C.A. Library in Hershey likely has this issue and can scan or copy pagesfor you. Very interesting reading that gives insights as to why some cars weresucceeding and others failing at this time! The Willys car (in the low-priced category)had a terrible review and was evidently a very poor car in 1955. Clipper47
Thanks for that John. Packard was having some serious teething problems with the Connor Ave. plant move in 1955 and there were some quality control problems.
Guest BillP
Probably safe to say that many people here are drooling over this Coupe de Ville. My granddad had a new Sedan de Ville in '55, and I recall the "receivers" that my grandmother bored into the sheetrocked back wall of the garage with the voluptuous front bumper. D Yaros
SOLD! SOLD! SOLD! With mixed emotion I report that The Gray Lady has been sold. Soon, she shall be on her way to her new home, a museum in Amarrillo, TX; Bill's Backyard Classics http://www.bbcamatx.com/ Bill is an avid collector. He has more than a few Cads. The same may be said on this score with regard to 1957 Oldsmobiles. I take consolation in the fact she will be appreciated, well cared for and enjoyed by many. I do have to admit it would seem strange to go to an auto museum and see my car?
John_S_in_Penna
Yes, it was a beautiful car.I hope the buyer loves his cars enoughto drive them at least a few times a year.(I think most cars in museums are NOTas well maintained, as they tend to becomestationary objects, which is not as good for them.) D Yaros
John, I hold the same opinion on this as you. The seller detected my concern when I specifically inquired about its museum status. He did mention that he does in fact drive his cars, now & then. With 90 cars in his stable, one must wonder just how often "now & then". My thinking is, it has to be more than the <=200 miles I put on the car during my 6 years of stewardship! Matt Harwood
Having sold several cars to the folks down there at Bill's, I'll say that it's going to a good home. They seem to know how to take care of their cars and do it for the love, not the money. I'll also privately admit that I was a little bummed to see this car sell so quickly, as I was trying to marshal the resources to buy it for myself. What a great car! Congratulations on the sale and rest assured it's going to a good home.
