Dave Mellor NJ
Anybody know the purpose of the oval wheels, walking beam? From LowKat on HAMB
Craig Gillingham
I haven't seen those styles of wheels before, but I have seen the tractor, it's an Allis chalmers M7 snow tractor. They normally had tracks at the rear. I found these references to the wheels through a google search.Photo came from here; The reinvented wheelUnusual locomotion
West Peterson
It would be interesting to see one of these in motion. I'm assuming that the two sets of rear wheels with the compensator eliminates a bumpy ride.
Rusty_OToole
This was an improvement over the triangular wheel. It eliminated one bump. The triangular wheel was an advance over the square wheel for the same reason.
trimacar
The attached illustration makes it more clear to me the purpose of this arrangement, in going through snow or mud, one wheel is a larger bearing surface for support on the muck, the second wheel is a driving force, and they alternate...and the beam, as West states, would rock to give a smoother ride....interesting.... Shop Rat
Wow, Trimacar, what a find to explain this unique configuration. Makes perfect sense now.
Guest straight shooter
By the looks of it the top speed is probably no more than 5 mph.
West Peterson
I'd have to disagree. A person walks at around 3mph. I suspect this might do around 20mph for top speed.
