In the early years some states had a law that required you to actually carry a lamp so far ahead of the car to warn oncoming traffic or to warn of your car's movements. Richard Lichtfel Posted February 23, 2012 Share Posted February 23, 2012 Bicycle lamp pre-1900. Carbide and water generated acetylene gas and thedifferent brackets fit on the front fork. I use mine on my high wheel bike of 1880 vintage and it works great, except that it is getting hard to get the carbide these days. Seems it is considered bomb making material.
