  1. Took the bumper off today(and a bunch of other stuff to send off for refinishing). The facebar itself while not perfectly true, is able to be twisted pretty easily. The brackets and supports are alot beefier than the bar itself. I'm thinking that the position of the bar is more determined by how the supports are placed(or shimmed).

Hope it is visible in the photos. The gap between the bumper guards(bullets/Dagmars)and grill extension(semi circle) is different right side to left side. It looks as if the left outer upper bar extension was clipped from the side. Is the bar bent down on the left or has it just been shifted somehow ? I see bolts in elongated holes in the mounts.

I tried putting a jack under the left guard to attempt to push the left side up to no avail.

Would like to get this straightened out so I can get the chrome done.

    Any suggestion appreciated.

    Thanks.

  3. Actually the meter still works. It just doesn't center properly. High charge/discharge rate will cause the needle to park left or right, even going around a corner. Rap the gauge the needle will pop back. I don't see a return spring, and I am not going to tear apart the NOS unit. Lesson learned.

Ammeter on right is original ammeter I removed from car to clean up. Case bezel is crimped to case. My fatal mistake after cleaning, was to tap the bezel secure, with chisel hammer(lightly). Apparently the meter did not like this. The needle does not center(more about that in my previous post). Someone mentioned something about a centering spring. I did not see anything that looked like that. Can these meters be repaired? It's a shame because it cleaned up good.

Note: Meter on left is an NOS I picked up. I originally took the meter apart because the needle was faded. The needle on right is,as per Willie,Krylon 3101 Fluorescent Red/Orange. The needle on left is factory original. Perty dang close, huh?

At least the rest of the needles look as good.

Do I need to remove the top of dash to remove the Speedometer?

  5. The needle will swing all the way left or right and stick. But will free up with a rap on the glass, function properly for a while and then swing right or left and stick again. This swing is sometimes prompted by a right or left turn. Like a turn and bank indicator on an airplane except it doesn't center itself after the turn is complete. Weird, I found an NOS unit on the big auction site just in case.

  6. OK, did the clock, gas and ammeter.Painted the needles(Krylon 3101 Flour. Red/Orange) Cleaned the lenses(some plastic crazing, nothing to do about that) and wire wheeled the bezels.

    Look a 100% better.

Question. Anything special need to be done to remove the Oil Pressure and Water Temp Guages?

    Thanks

PS These gauges are not fun to remove!

  7. Hey Trap, welcome to the forum.

Bought my Roadmaster from a guy in Huntsville. Problem with NYS DMV,Alabama doesn't list the weight of the vehicle on the reg. I looked it up and wrote on the app. they questioned and would not take my word for it. The wanted me to get a notarized letter from Buick with the weight. When I asked if there are or were any 55 Buicks registered in NY they were not amused. I brought my copy of American Cars 1946-1959 and after a lengthy discussion finally registered the car. So now I tell everyone I have the only 55 Buick in the state of NY. Got YOM plate reg. later.

    Good luck with the lock.

  8. 4 days since repair, drove about an hour. Smells fine to me. Suggest filter replacement and evap coil cleaning in any A/C car especially a smoked in car.

Will present conclusive evidence next time wife comes for a ride. Don't wait by the computer for conclusive evidence.

  9. Thanks for the update Paul. Another example that those old units can be revived to chill again!

With some appreciated help and a sacrificed Hawaiian vacation worth of R12!

Wish I would have seen the unscented Fabreeze, though it's better than it was.

  10. Thanks to help of a very knowledgeable forum member I have an extremely cold blowing A/C unit.

However, the first comment from the wife was, "the car stinks". I was just thrilled it was cold.

The wire mesh filter in the picture is not from a KFC deep fryer. It's probably from a couple of decades of Lucky Strikes.

I pried the edges of the frame apart to remove the old element and used a 2 stage foam and thin fibreglass sheet filter, tucked in best as possible and recrimp the edges. Of course if the exact size can be found that would be easier.

The evaporator coils and plumbing had some nasty looking schmutz on them as well. With a spray bottle I wet the area with water, then sprayed Simple Green. Scrubbed as best as can with a nylon brush, rinsed with water then sprayed Fabreeze. All this will run out the condensate vents(missing the buckets you placed and going on the garage floor).

I drove the car with the A/C on and it no longer smells like an Oscar Madison poker night.

Smells like Fabreeze but I would think that will dissipate.post-54093-143142175515_thumb.jpg
