  1. I will be getting my new rear springs soon. I have questions about installing them. When I attach them to the axle I know you need to torque the U-bolts. I can't find the specs for nut torque on the U-bolts. I also understand that you are supposed to torque the nuts after the rig is sitting on the ground with wheels on. Can anyone help me on this procedure/info? I have also heard that you are supposed to use new U-bolts. I don't think these are available (wide saddle on axle top) any more. I don't plan on hauling much with my truck, so would it be ok to use the old U-bolts if they are in good shape? Thanks in advance.
  2. thanks all for the info and suggestions. If I replace the spring, is it best to replace both of them? Or do they not "lose" any of their springiness? thanks again.
  3. thanks for your input. I'm working with my supplier to see if the bushing is the wrong size for the eye. He may have some available that would fit and still screw tight to the shackle.
  4. I'm replacing my rear spring shackles and bushings. The shackle goes on ok on the hanger side, but I cant get the bushing to start in the spring side. There is quite a bit of wear, and I don't want to force the bushing in and screw it up. Is there anything I can do short of replacing the spring itself. (ream out or rethread the inside of the spring etc?) Thanks in advance. Bob
  5. Is there a way to set the forum so they automatically start on "sort by start date"? Thanks. Bob
  6. " I told you the helium in tires would work on saving the tire tread".
  7. Where is a good place to get shock link bushings and washers/ keepers for my 36? Thanks in advance.
  8. To me looks like 2 left hand drives and one right hand drive. Would they make both in the same year?
  9. I guess I might have to bite the bullet and check/replace the pinion seal since it has been sitting so long. Thanks... Bob
  10. I have no Idea. I haven't taken any of the diff apart. I assume that it may be original as the truck has been in my family since early 1950's. I don't recall my dad ever doing anything to the diff. It has been sitting not run since mid 60's.
  11. I'm to the point of oil in the diff and putting on all 4 drums. I'm considering Royal Purple 85-140 syn in the diff. I'm not sure of what grease to use on the wheel bearings. What's good, whats not. How much of the area between the inner and outer bearings on the front wheels should be filled with grease? 1/2, 3/4 or all full? How will I know when the rear axle bearing have enough grease? Thanks in advance Bob.
  12. Thank you all. I just don't want to have things go SPROING.. and have it tip over or something. I have 2 20 ton truck stands under the front axle, so i'm assuming that will keep it pretty stable on the front. Thanks again..
  13. I don't quite understand about jack under spring, but I am /was not planning on removing springs from the axle housing. Is the process still the same in that case? thanks.
  14. I just need help and/or confirmation on procedure for replacing rear spring components. My understanding is that I need to put jack stands under the frame at the rear, and a jack under the differential. Raise the jack to relieve pressure on the springs to remove and replace the shackles and bushings. The components at the rear of the springs first, and then the front of the spring components last. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bob
  15. on the 10 inch steel drums does the 115 refer to 11.5 inches? or something else. (MM) Do you know if its the same for a 36? Thanks. Bob
  16. I don't know if it's the same, but I have an extra for a 38 D8.
  17. left rear brakes are done with all new parts. I think I got everything back together right.
  18. found some seats that I hope will work. Will need some alterations and new upholstery, but they fold forward to get to gas tank. They are from 63-68 MGB.
  19. thanks for the info..Bob
  20. pics (new and old) Doing a rusty restoration myself, so it's not gonna be anywhere near perfect body wise. Have everything new for braking system. (master and wheel cylinders, lines, bearings, cups and seals, shoes and related hardware.) Just getting started putting things together so I don't have much to show yet.
  21. Finally getting some time (and $) to work on my 36 panel. First (of many more to come) question.. The bearings on rear axle shaft- do they come off from the the diff side or the wheel side? Thanks in advance. Bob DUH...... If I looked at it closer (which I just did) I would have realized they come off on the wheel side. Thanks anyway.. Bob
  22. know where i can get or rent these? I'm thinking about making an axle puller.
  23. I need to do the same on my 36 LC. I could not tell if the inner was near the end of the axle or in or by the differential. Once the axle is out, is it easy or hard to get it back into place? Bob
