  1. I do not have a trans yet and if the car I buy still has the dual range I would like to use it but I am looking for a jetaway just in case it does not,if I find one that runs I will probably not use the 371 but I am looking for one that does not run.

Jeff, I presume you meant converting a 371 to a Dual Range Hydro from the 371's Controlled Coupling Hydro. That is a easy conversion to do, however the Controlled Coupling with a stock or mild hop up 371 will beat the Dual Range in performance, smoothness (if you want). Overall efficiency is equal as both transmissions have split torque in all ranges. In a drag race, the Controlled Coupling will get out in front and stay out in front because of it's 3.97 first gear compared to the Dual Range 3.82.

    FYI,they are both called Hydro's.

  2. This week I picked up for free what is supposed to be a 1959 371 motor and thinking about recreating the 53 Olds I pieced togather back in 85 but this time a 2 door hard top instead of a 2 door sedan if I can find one, this time I have a little more knowledge of those cars and I now know where I can go to hook that 371 up to a 4 speed hydro instead of using a jetaway trans. Some of you might not like it since its not exactly going to be a all original car but it will all bolt togather with no cutting or modifications, the car I built in 85 with mostly junkyard parts would blow away a then almost new corvette but I know it will not do it to a almost new one now. Its going to be alot harder to build today since the junkyards I got parts for the last build are just memories and getting a body for around 200 dollars today will be next to impossible so it might take me a few years but I am going to have another mid 50s Olds,I should have never gotten rid of the other 53 since it had the best of all worlds. It was quick out of the hole and plenty of top end and if i kept my foot out of it would get almost 20 miles to the gallon on the highway and I let it go.

  3. I will take a much larger car over a smaller car with a so called larger interior any day,if it was not for a 71 Olds 88 I would have been pushing up daisies since 79. A big interior in a little car is still a little car no matter how much spin the manufacture puts on it.

  4. I was looking a a new F150 last november and what I was looking at was basicly a modern version of the 87 F150 XLT I bought in 89 and the sticker was 33,000,regular cab,8 foot bed and a V8 and normal comfort options. I just cant spend that much money on a vehicle,I bought the 87 with 21,000 miles for 10 grand and would love to find a 2 year old truck again that is reasonable but they are over 20 now.

I was a Ford truck dealership a few weeks ago getting a recall taken care of on my 94 F150. The prices of new pick up trucks were jaw dropping. Most were 40K and up. A few basic models were on the lot and they were in low to mid 20s. There were a few Transit Connects on the lot too. They were all over 20K. The similarly equipped E150s were not much more than the TC's. The TC's are tiny compared to the E-vans. I could only imagine the new Transit replacements will cost a lot more than the E150's they replace.
  5. I was in a wreck where if I were belted in with a shoulder belt I most likely would have been decapitated by the hood coming in through the windshield,I was knocked over towards the driver when the car hit the tree. I did not come out of it unhurt as it tore me up and spent almost a month in the hospital and I still do not like wearing them,I have no problem with people wanting to put them in but wondering why all of a sudden people are worried about not having any seat belts. Most people over 50 have been in vehicles with no seat belts and are still alive.

You were one of the lucky ones who grew up in one piece because you didn't have a significant crash.

Remember Ralph Nader's campaign in the '60s and '70s and how hard the car makers resisted? Try looking at the road toll now per person-mile and compare to that in the 1950s when there were no seat belts.

  6. I would like to buy one new vehicle in my life but there is not much out there that I would even consider,I am 53 and the closest to new was a one year old Harley. Want a new mustang but not practical so it will most likely be a truck but if the trucks in a few years turn out to be like the wimpy FWD based, for condo owners only and girly designed Honda ridgeline then I will give up on the dream of something new.

  7. I do not understand the must have seat belts in old cars thinking these days,we all grew up in cars without them and survived so why now. I hate wearing them and my old cars are my escape from all the modern government forced so called safety items,I am probably in the minority with this thought but I will never add them to any of my old cars but have no problems with those that do.

  8. I would rather walk then ride in the back or a Prius or what ever that other ugly thing is.

Right now a great many taxis (about 1/2 in NYC) are hybrids. Progressive cities, like San Francisco, are nearing 100% hybrid taxi fleets. Priuses and older Ford Escapes are very common, even here in Cincinnati.

However NYC recently awarded a 10 year contract to Nissan to build Nissan’s NV-200 as the exclusive taxi supplier there. Environmentally it's a step backwards, and is largely related to the unique way NYC issues it's taxi medallions (e.g. not to the people who buy the gas for the taxi).

  9. My 55 was a very late production and has 56 parts and a 4th color in the interior where it looks like they ran out of the green and substituted a light blue so if I ever showed it the judges would go nuts, the light blue was on the rear of the backrests and on the top of the rear panels and I wanted to put the light blue back on the backrests but could not find a color that matched so I put it the way it was supposed to be. It was bought new by my dad so I know thats the way it came from the factory.
