  1. What I am wondering is...Is my gas gauge shot, or am I missing something? If it is shot, can I replace just the gauge or do I have to replace the whole instrument cluster? How do I get the cluster out? I did have the dash pad off to get at the round connector on the back of the cluster, but I didn't go any farther than that. And finally, for now, where will I be able to find a replacement? I appreciate any help.
  2. The gas gauge in my 62 Electra has not been working for a while and I recently decided it was about time to fix it. When the key is OFF the needle pegs at EMPTY, and when the key is turned to ON or RUN the needle pegs at FULL. This seems to point to an open condition between the gauge and the sender (if I understand the workings of the gauge). At first I thought it was a broken wire I found going to the sender, but after repairing that the gauge still didn't work. I have since tested the sender (it works) and the wiring from where the harness plugs into the instrument cluster all the way back to the sender and it is good, I got the same ohm reading at the sender and the instrument cluster connector (12 ohms) and then filled the tank and checked again and got 33 ohms at both locations. Any ideas? It would be nice to have a gas gauge again, although with price of gas lately, it is kind of nice to look at the gauge and see it constantly full. Thanks for the help in advance.
  3. Route 66 was before my time, but I think it would be awesome to be able to take a trip in my 62 Electra down a restored Route 66.
  4. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Gee, isnt it time to introduce another tax cut for the wealthy to get things going?</div></div> I wouldn't mind another one of those "tax cuts for the rich". Apparently as an E-6 in the military I qualify as being "rich" since I benefited from the tax cuts? I wouldn't consider myself rich, but if you want to think I am rich go right ahead and keep living in your delusion.
  5. Smartin, the metal housing of the fuel filter on my 62 is painted green. My engine compartment is pretty much untouched original (grimy and ugly, but pretty much original) so I am pretty confident that it was painted green originally.
  6. To everyone that has replied to the original message: Thank you! I have noticed smoke coming out of my oil fill breather also, and have been wondering what I can/should do. Now, I have an idea what I can check and test to see what I need to do. Thanks again!
  7. I wish everyone would stop posting these pictures of 59 Buicks...they are making me want one. I can't afford another car, I barely have the time or money to work on my 62.
  8. Lots of very knowledgeable people here (not necessarially me), who are great help. Go ahead and post your questions, because you will get the answers.
  9. Thanks Smartin, that did it. I picked up a brake switch today and put it on and the brake lights work fine. Thanks again. Brian
  10. I was amazed today. I had a low beam out on my 62 Electra, so I figured this was as good of time as any to replace all of my headlights with halogens. What I found were 3 replacement lights and one T3 that according to the chart mentioned earlier could be one of the originals. Granted, is was a high beam, so it probably wasn't used much, but a headlight still going after over 40 years is still pretty amazing.
  11. The brake lights on my 62 Electra are not working. The tail lights (all 4) light up, the turn signals (outboard lights) work, but when I hit the brakes there is nothing. I have ruled out the bulbs being bad, because the turn signals work, so I guess that leaves me with wires or brake switch, right? It looks like only the outboard lights function as brake lights. Can anyone confirm this? Any tips or ideas appreciated.
  12. Just got home from a trip to see family in Minnesota. Filled up just west of Albert Lea, MN and paid $1.85/gal for 87 octane ($1.80 if you paid inside) get back home here in southeast WI gas is $2.14 (thanks WI for that gas tax). Just to spite our governor (I thought about flipping the bird toward the state capital while I did it, but then reconsidered) I topped off the tank just before crossing into WI. I'm not sure where all that gas tax money is going, except for that Marquette Interchange project in Milwaukee (those of you in the Milwaukee area know what I'm talking about), which when is it completed still won't handle enough traffic, but will look a whole lot prettier. Anyway, enough of my rambling, just wanted to post my experience this weekend.
  13. I agree...very tempting. It sure would look nice next to my Electra. Unfortunately one 62 Buick is enough work for me at this time. Brian
  14. That is a really neat website. I bookmarked it for future reference. Thanks for sharing it.
  15. Good job! You're braver than I am! Brian
  16. I got my poster yesterday too. I really like the looks of the Lucerne...definitely could see myself in one.
  17. Thanks guys, I will probably go with it. I also found a lot of comments about Scarebird on the Performance Years Pontiac forum, and it sounds like what I have been looking for. Thanks again!
  18. I have been looking for an affordable way to put disc brakes on the front of my 62 Electra since I got it in 95. Well, I finally found an affordable kit. Now, I am wondering if anybody has heard of this outfit. The website is www.scarebird.com . The kit includes just mounting brackets, but uses common GM rotors and calipers. If anybody has used these guys or have heard anything about them I would appreciate hearing what you have to say about them. Thanks!
  19. I have a 62 Electra also, and I have had problems finding parts too. I am doing more of a restification on mine. It will still be close to stock, but with subtle changes here and there to give it its own personality.
