  1. Since my Maxwell will be packed away for the winter cold weather should it ever hit Georgia which it hasn't in the last 13 years I've lived here and since I've spent my entire adult life (over half a century) working on cars nearing a century old that got that old on a steady diet of this oil I think I'll continue using it as I and these cars go into our golden years. Howard Dennis
  2. I have to agree with Chuck R on the 30W oil. I put it in my My Maxwell's clutch and it seems to have worked on the two trial runs I have made around the neighborhood but I have not tried it out on the open road as my car isn't done yet. I also run 30W non detergent (4 quarts) in the engine. Howard Dennis
  3. Digger914, Thanks for posting that, I just might be able to get that one past her. Really appreciate the help Howard Dennis
  4. I can see you don't know my wife. I couldn't come up with any way of disposing of the leftover water that she could live with. Some people are lucky enough to have an understanding spouse who actually likes this hobby. I'm not one of them. Howard Dennis
  5. Funny you should mention that Larry. That was my idea originally until wife heard of my plan and she put up such a stink I couldn't reason with her no matter what I tried. To hear her I was about to create another Chernobyl ! So I just gave up and want to impact her checkbook rather than the environment. Howard Dennis
  6. Does anyone know where I can get fabric dyed? I need some belting and canvas fasteners dyed to match the canvas top on my Maxwell before they are sewn together. They are white now and need to be dyed gold or tan. Howard Dennis
  7. This commercial reminds me of every time I've ever tried to get help from an insurance company or a warranty! Howard Dennis
  8. You would think so but every time I try to get my hundreds of oriental items covered for the thousands of dollars they are worth I get insane insurance quotes and also demands that I get collection appraised. I have never found an appraiser who will give a blanket appraisal but instead wants to charge $20-$25 per item and with hundreds of small items this gets expensive real quick! Howard Dennis
  9. Just looked at my last post and thought if I'm going to keep this invoice it should be framed with the best copy of this photo I can get. What do you think? Howard Dennis
  10. Frank, I really did stumble across this on eBay and was the only bidder so it got added to my Maxwell literature and I hadn't looked at it seriously for over a year but knew about Kelsey. This recent re-discovery lead me to search the Maxwell Registry and find there are only 3 known Model N's. I also ran across this great factory photo of a Model N Doctor's Car. Howard Dennis
  11. Peter, boy I guess I can't do math anymore either! I was thinking of my own car coming up on it's own 100th birthday and just ran with that without realizing this car would have been 100 10 years ago! Howard Dennis
  12. Stumbled across this and decided to see if by some miracle the car still existed. If so it's about to have it's 100th birthday! Howard Dennis
  13. Peter, I had the same reaction several years ago when someone mentioned Maxwell racing cars. I countered with the remark that an engine with 20-25 HP, 178? cubic inches and only 2 main bearings did not seem like a very good formula to go racing with. When you start searching and it is hard to find but Maxwell just like the modern 10,000 HP drag racers today made a racer that had name only in common with the product that was on the showroom floor. Maxwell racers started at 445 cubic inches and were mandated back to 300 cubic inches, overhead cams, ball main bearings, and ran on both gas and kerosene and were quite successful. Howard Dennis
  14. Just acquired this off eBay. May well be the only surviving example. Maxwell Racing Time Chart. On the back is a chart. It measures 4 3/4 x 2 1/4. laminated and very good condition. Judging by the car and the mention of Indy I'm guessing this is from 1914-1915. Anyone seen another? Any history known or input on where this would have been given to or acquired by the general public? Howard Dennis
  15. Thanks Peter, this is a big help. I really appreciate it. Could you check your hubs against the photos I've just posted? Notice how my hubs narrow to a smaller size just below the bottom of the hubcap? If my memory is correct this is where I ran into trouble when I tried planning this modernization on paper before. I'm curious if your later Maxwell has the same hub narrowing? Howard Dennis
  16. That little oni, demon in Japanese, netsuke was picked up a few months ago in Richmond, VA antiques mall when we were visiting our daughter. Do you ever sell any of your netsukes? Howard Dennis
  17. After being gifted my wife's father's 17th Ct. Samurai sword picked up in the Okinawa invasion we kind of went overboard collecting anything Samurai and also Japanese art. Howard Dennis
  18. Peter, I think you misunderstood my post. I still need the information to convert the parts I just found. Thanks, Howard Dennis
  19. Thanks Peter, I just picked up a spare set of hubs and spindles so maybe I can convert those and be ready when the current set fails. Howard Dennis
  20. I'd like to buy N.O.S. condensors for Atwater-Kent Type CC Distributor. They can have metal tabs with holes on each end OR just metal tabs. They measure 2 1/2 in. long by 3/4 in. wide. Howard Dennis
  21. If you still haven't figured out where noise is coming from try this taught to me by another old time mechanic. He used a long screwdriver but a long metal rod or wooden dowel will work as well. Being VERY careful!! Put the end against the bearing housings and then put the other end against the opening to your ear against your skull. You will be able to tell a failing bearing from one running normally. I probably should have said this first but this method requires you keep the other end out of fan and pulleys and belts. Howard Dennis
  22. Did not know that but made the comment based on seeing large quantity of black cars & buggy's parked in front of church's & houses when visiting the area years ago. Howard Dennis
  23. Could it be because that was the color bought by the Amish & Mennonite people in the area? Howard Dennis
  24. Thanks Peter, no hurry I'd just like the information for the future as I'm running old original ball bearings and know that failure IS highly likely somewhere down the road. Howard
