    1914 Maxwell

I have a 1916 maxwell touring car. I would be interested in seeing pictures of your car. they really dont have much value like most antique cars. Your being a 1914 may help t6he value as its eligible for the brass tours. (1915 or older) I was able to geta plaque for mine being a 100 year old car. lot of fun but tricky to keep it running especially on unleaded gas. bob
  2. I have a 1916 maxwell and use regular gear lube like you would put in any car or truck. When the car was built they just used heavy oil as gear lube did not exist. bob
  3. my 1916 has a bosch magneto. As Howard said, the distributor system was used later. If it will fit, I highly endorse the magneto ignition. Starts easily and runs great. bob

    marmon vin #

Looking at a Marmon 34 up for auction in California. serial 3 is 7171756. Has California certificate of tile that reads vin per dmv report DR145535CAL. I am in Ohio and a dealer. I am concerned about registering the car in Ohio because the vin on the car does not match the title. It is possible they used the engine number. Does any one know what the DR on the vin would mean in California? Any help appreciated as I Really want this car. Also any way to decode the vin? thanks bob
  5. Update on wheel bearings. The inner ball bearings on my car were worn .008 on each ball. Replaced with new 9/16 ball bearings and took over half the play out. The remaining wear is on the race in the back of the wheel. The spindle shows no wear but the inner race is pitted and scored. I will try to replace those over the winter. Bearings were extremely inexpensive . I got 30 of them $10 and change. Took 22 to replace all. Incidentely the 1/4 turn on the pitmen arm took all play out of steering box. Still has full turning radius.Very easy to do and amazing result. bob
  6. 71 suburban,. Texas truck, nice original interior. New fleet white paint. Has the factory roof ac and it works. Pretty much all redone. 350 with top end rebuild. Leaving for Florida tonight but can send you pics when I get back. Truck is at my business in Springfield Ohio. Not perfect but as nice a driver as you could ask for. Asking 12000. Pm me if this interests in you. I'll be back next Thursday Dec 1st. Email is ulrace@aol.com bob
  7. Thanks guys for the info. Drove Max for an hour or so today taking people rides. Does have some shake in front end and also wobble in wood wheels. Taking front end down to check bearings again as play still there and its not in kingpins or tie rod ends. Have some in steering box but not much and can find no adjustment for gear play on the box .I have a manual for cars with production numbers after 447204 which is a much later model that shows a worm gear adjustment but also suggests removing pitman arm and steering shaft, rotating 1/4 turn and reassembling to engage fresher section of gear in straight ahead position. What an unusual thing! May try it for gear box play. My car is 1916. Does anyone know of steering box adjustment? Thanks bob
  8. My 1916 touring car is on the road and drives well up to 35-40 mph. After that it wanders some. When i repacked front wheel bearings i noticed enough play after adjustment that the wheels will move an inch or so even when adjusted as closely as possible. Anyone know of a source for wheel bearings or a solution to this problem? thanks; any tips or info appreciated. bob
  9. I have a 1916 tourer. May be interested in the rear end. i have had good luck with fastenal too. I am in ohio zip 45503. maybe other small parts. head light switch, steering wheel? Maybe list some of what you have. thanks bob
  10. Howard; I hope you got your clutch problem sorted. If not I can probably get picture for you as mine is apart to put ne ring gear on flywheel. Clutch had free play and worked fine. I have another cone clutch disc with more lining but I think I am putting it back just like it was. Let me know. thanks bob
  11. thanks howard; I think you are correct. Just strange to not have one. I tried to access my messages but do not have a pin yet until I get my magazine. I did find a wheel but may be interested in another if you can spare one. bob
