Just on a whim, have you tried advertising for the owner ( or his family) to contact you via the local newspaper? Or via craigslist? I would assume the car came from the vicinity of the yard where you bought it and give that a try. Maybe a local pennysaver type press document? Maybe even the local news station looking for some filler material would take it up?

Gorgeous! What beautiful work! Your white 51 is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for saving all those Buicks Mike. And thanks for the education on what goes into restoring one. I'd be interested in what the process is to make some of those curved rear "D" pillars.

Rartzt, just to let you know you dug up a 2009 thread, and the car is in Finland.

...Was pleased to see, though, that upstate New York got snow before Edmonton this year. ..
Well uhmmm, Thanks Rob!
I guess it wasn't funny but it was actually downstate NY, NJ and CT that got hit with the heavy snow. Schenectady county was just west of the white stuff, and last week we had close to 60* everyday. Didn't manage to get my cars out though.

Not to mention finishing up work on the Farm and preparing for the inevitable winter.

I agree and also send my wishes to all Veterans, for a
HAPPY VETERANS DAY.
Thanks for all you've done for all of us.
Also, thanks for starting this thread Buke.

You'll have two chances next year Matt. NC and Troy NY for the NorthEast Regional in August.

Budd, any chance of running a spacer behind the non A/C pulley to make up the distance? Or putting the non A/C pulley on backwards at least till another correct pulley comes available?
-
Putting it back together is one thing, taking it apart another. Not saying you'll run into stuck bolts but if you do, recently Mark Shaw shared an informative article on using a 50/50 mix of Acetone and transmission fluid as a replacement for penetrating oil. I used this on some pot metal parts attached to a hood and trunk lid I had off my old car, and in storage for over 30 years. I have to say that it worked great!

This forum is my favorite spot, every night! Nice pictures, good stories, great information and good laughs. Thanks:)
I can't agree more Matt..

I really had no idea that the chain was stretched. Remember, I thought this engine was rebuilt. It runs VERY strong, it just leaked a lot. So I just started taking pieces off of the engine that looked oily
.
This is what I found inside the timing chain. If it was less stretched, I wouldn't have noticed (possibly). The picture was hard to take but you should be able to smell what I'm stepping in.
Also note that I am merely applying pressure on one side of the chain (more slop on this side) with my ring finger.
Thanks for the picture Mike. I would be interesting to see what the new chain looks like installed. Right now I'm trying to remember if I ever changed the chain on my 56 back in 1986 or so, when I had the timing chain cover off. I know I did not replace the gears but just can't recall if I changed the chain.

Hi Mat, any reason it has to be factory correct? I mean custom bent exhaust guys do awesome work these days and the pipes do seems to last a long time. Just don't let anyone throw away any of the factory couplers. As a matter of fact the guy that did my custom exhaust on my super incorporated all the factory couplers.

I keep looking for one of those kind of cameras like what Smartin must have. The kind that makes everything look perfect. ....and easy......
I thought you already had one of those camera's...
-
Those types of cameras are very expensive!
LOL... Maybe expensive camera type but well worth the cost...
-
Mike, sorry to hear you've had all this trouble. Daily drivers can be a real chore. If you have not yet pulled that timing chain off, is there a chance of posting a picture or two showing how yo determined the chain was stretched? I'm not doubting you at all, just interested in how you made that determination.

Wow! I really sympathize with our CT brothers and sisters. Welcome back guys.

Lamar, is that the front or back of your house?

Looks like good clone material for a 1954 Landau Pickup.....just whack off the roof behind the rear doors, go to Walmart and buy a silver Thermos & 4 tin cups, and you're almost done!
Too far for me too.
Al Mack
"500 Miles West of Flint" or "1800 Miles East of the Pacific"
LOL... That's funny...

Agreeing w/ Pete. That would be a great car to have if one has the time and space to work on it.
-
Great Bernie! Now I don't feel so bad looking at my place. I still think I gotta take Dandy Dave's advice about the shake out... LOL
-
Damn, another clean garage. LOL... Welcome Matt. Hope you find what you want.

Hey Robert, Great pic of you and Dad with the prize. I always suspected my Dad liked my cars but he would never work on em with me. His thing was horticulture and while he liked having nice cars, he was not about to spin a wrench.
-
You mean to tell us you are not gonna pack up Rita and make a long weekend out of this trip?
-
Maybe so Roberta, but I don't think we are limited to recieving one nomination.

Thanks for the pictures of that process Mike. It is facinating. I imagine a large part of the shop is consumed by these cutters or lathes?
