  1. That is a good question...I have no idea what to do with that gasket.
  2. Ok, it looks like I might be able to save the pump, as long as I can find a C-clip that will hold the shaft in. When I initially pulled the pump apart, it just fell into pieces, and I was unsure of how to reassemble it. I think I have it now. Generator, steering pump bracket, fan, and trans cooling line ends are done. Oh yeah, after I scratched my head about the pump shaft for a bit, I resumed cleanup on the pulley.
  3. Idiot move of the day: Do not try to beat the pulley off the power steering pump. The shaft will come out with it if you try hard enough. I now have a power steering doorstop. Couple photos to follow...I just needed to come in from the garage and simmer after that bonehead move.
  4. I agree! I've used this socket on several 58-60 nailheads, and never had this problem before this car. They have always been tight, but were never so tight that the socket would get wedged. It didn't take much to get the clearance I needed.
  5. I don't use exhaust manifold gaskets anymore. I simply make sure both surfaces are flat and true...then bolt it up. Buick didn't use gaskets at the factory.
  6. I ground down a 13/16" spark plug socket, because I just had this issue with my Roadmaster. I effectively decreased the OD of the socket itself so it would fit into the holes of the head.
  7. Rustoleum "Chrome" paint as a base, with a light powdering of their "brass" paint. Voila! The chrome paint is nice and thick, and has a really reflective finish. It also hides a lot of pits and imperfections.
  8. I didn't rebuild it...just stripped and painted myself. My little faux cad plating looks pretty good on this one
  9. The degreasing has begun. Ugh. Firewall paint is ordered. I have a few parts I need to get before I can reassemble. I got the heads back today...all ready for install! Finished bits...
  10. Wow...very nice, and looks to be well worth it. I am (kind of) in the market for one of these, but I am really looking for a 4 speed coupe.
  11. I would pull the distributor and manually prime it. This will tell you once you actually get pressure, since the drill will load up tremendously once it primes. It may take a minute, too. Why did you swap to the 59 pump? I am nervous there might be a difference that is creating a problem. Did you compare the two to make sure they looked the same?
  12. Got the booster and vent cover off...as well as the steering box. The nut holding the booster on was impossible to turn, so I clamped a set of channel locks onto it and spun the booster off from the outside. Success! Time clean up for a rehearsal.
  13. I think there are 16
  14. I got my radiator back today...he had to remove the tanks and rod it out. He also replaced the overflow tube. All for $135, which I thought was a good deal. He is rebuilding the heater core for $215.
  15. I figured out why I had so much play in the steering. The rag joint was completely crumbled to bits.
  16. I have to wonder what people did to get the last (rear) pushrod out of the engine with it still in the car. I still have the vent cover on the drivers side and it hits before I can remove it. Did they unbolt the mounts and jack the engine up on its side a bit? Same thing with the rear most head bolt... I got them out, but I pulled the head off and nearly ruined the pushrod in doing so.
  17. I'm sure year of make, plant, and other things came into play whether it was painted/unpainted/engine color/black/etc... I like the bare look, so I'll stick to that.
  18. My Limited's trans was completely unpainted except some paint inspection marks. The Roadmaster appears the same way, but it is covered in goo from 50+ years of leaking.
  19. My weekend progress report... I didn't get a photo tonight, but this was earlier today during the thrash session. Here are some shiny new bits from the weekend... Why must every heater core I pull out look like this? ...never fails.
  20. Did you grow up in Sedalia? I have several extended family members there.
  21. Some shiny bits... Not a ton of progress this week so far, but I have only worked for about an hour a few nights after work. Tomorrow morning I should be able to get some decent progress.
  22. Great to hear the whole story, Doug! Thanks for sharing...always fun to see more 58's Those eyebrows would look good on my Roadie
  23. I wonder if both of my cars had this installed, and then discarded. They both have this mystery screw, but no spring.
