  1. Know this G model well. We used to do WW2 hanger dances with it when it was in Fort Worth during the start of the restoration. I have a long history of working with the WW2 history like this back to the Patton muesum in early 91 when we began restoring a Tiger II with help of some surving German mechanic's. Think restoring a car is hard trying doing a tank or airplane !
  2. So say a shop was given this job to do. price estimate being it looks time intensive ?
  3. Can someone tell me if changing the gears in the rear end of a 40-41 Buick is any different then any other year? A car was presented to me in a trade offer and the car was delivered new to a very , VERY, hilly and mountainous area. It seems the owner had the gearing changed for that hilly area in order to get up and down the inclines better. Car has 15 inch tire right now and combined with the gears, it is really turning some higher then normal RPMS for sure. It is pretty flat here so going back to factory specs (or even a little more highway friendly ratio) would be on the ticket for sure. So would like to know how big a job it is as the cost could be a deal breaker. And who has the gears for sale?
  4. I just can't seem to find the time to get out and down to the car barn. Today I am hoping. Everyone at work seemed to come down with the covid at once so extra hours for me. I already had it back in late December so guess who gets the OT. I had a "Why don't I kick myself in the head" moment a couple days ago regarding my starter. I have a nice rebuilt correct starter here. I thought it was the wrong year but nope, it is the MAX4020. Just no solenoid on it. I am guessing these are transistion type starters from foot switch to solenoid for these 2 years. I looked at the casing close and sure enough there are holes for that funny looking selonoid. I thought what I was looking at on the floor was for the foot switch. Stupid me. Like I said mine will spin when jumped over but will not throw out. Hopefully today I can get the backed up chores done and pull it. Question. Is there anyway to manually move the engagement rod(?) to see if it is stuck while it is in the car? Would like to be able to move it up to the shop before getting into it. When the starter spins you can tell it is shot by the jingle jangle of stuff going on. Question. Who has solenoids for this year starter?
  5. I often wondered how Buick got by with putting in 455's while the Chevelle was limited to the 396/402 till 1970?
  6. Right now it has been so dry the leaves are just starting to fall without any color change. NW of Fort Worth. 98 was the high yesterday. Had the big girl out early.
  7. It was this time of year where Dad and I would pack up for a few days and head into the catskills, following back roads and turn off's looking for old farm dumps to dig bottles. It was really just an excuse I think to go look at my grandfathers old farm in Boukes Falls and drive down memory lane.
  8. Just beautiful and thank you for sharing. I so much miss the fall colors now living here in TX. These pictures really take me back.
  9. I will get some pictures of mine tonight for you. I do have a diagram some place of it.
  10. It is an autolite MAX 4020A. I have a rebuilt 4020A here but with a foot switch and not solenoid activated. So a trade could be in the works.
  11. Well being I can't find a spare I am just going to bite the bullet and look into rebuilding my own starter. Here is what it is doing. Sometimes when you push the starter button in engages nicely and spins great starting the car immediately. Sometimes you push the button, nothing happens. So jumping the terminals with the screwdriver gets it to spin (With a jangling sound) where you can then hit the starter button and it will spin out and engage and start the car. Now for the past week you can jump the terminals, have it spin, but the starter button will not cause any function with the starter at all. I going to take to tapping on it a little bit as the goal is to get it to start and onto the lift and get the starter out for a rebuild. My experience with starters is limited to say the least especially of this year. I have no qualms about taking it apart as the problem looks to be in the drive (You can even here it jangle sometimes when driving) and solenoid I am figuring. Parts look available for those items. I see Bernbaums Mopar products has a starter rebuild kit. Am I opening up a big can of worms here? The problem seems like a mix of 50% electrical and 50% mechanical. It is an autolite 4020A. I do have a very nice 4020A rebuilt BUT it is for vehicle with a foot switch. Can any of this starter be used ?
  12. Still looking for a starter for my 39 Chrysler Royal. MAX 4020A. Any help much appreciated before the cold weather arrives.
  13. Need a starter for a 39 Chrysler Royal. Leads appreciated.
  14. I can live on beer 90% of the time. Steak and fried mushrooms with onions the other 10%
  15. With our weather finally cooling down in the mornings the pups are able to get back to our weekend drives to the hardware and beer stores. 48 to start is pretty chilly when it has been lower 90's all week !
  16. I am working that bug out on 46 Dodge right now. Except I found a pin hole in the metal line and when cutting it out it crumbled. I think ethanol exposes a lot of issues in fuels systems these days.
  17. I have yet to Bug Tussle. My buddy has a farm in Honey Grove. It is always just so freaken HOT.
  18. Mine is shot and can't find the parts to rebuild. Only wants to actuate once in a while and sounds horrible when it does. More then one thing wrong with it as bendix wants to rattle when driving. Jumping it with a screw driver won't get it to jump out at all.. It just spins. Anyone help a guy out? What other years might fit? I do have a good older rebuilt starter out of a 37-38 but it is a floor switch type for trade.
  19. Off to the hardware store before we hit 100+ plus today. Needed some tubing to rework part of the home brewery. As usual for some odd reason the needle on the Buick compass always points to "beer" regardless where i end up. Today it was beer and cigars. What is the old saying? "Let the horse have the reins and it will find you water"? My Buick always seems to find beer.
  20. Things were tough during the Korean war so he bolted on a lawnmower blade.
  21. Installing new fuel tank and sending unit in my 46 Dodge. 2 wire unit, 2 wires there going to the sender. Both wires broken and not connected. How do I determine which wire goes where. I am guessing post to left is ground. Right is powered. Turning on key I should only get some juice from one wire. Yes?
