  1. OK, so poking around on *another* site, I found a couple tidbits. It looks like the '57 tailshaft is longer. The '56 & '57 tailshafts seemed to be swappable, but I don't know about '55 & '57... the long pole may be that the motor mounts also changed in '57, and I don't think this donor engine comes with them. There's also a '56 engine available locally. Stuck valve, but turns over. Cheaper, but a much more questionable investment. '55 heads on the '56 block?
  2. I've got a friend with a '55 Special, 4 door post. She did a bunch of body work on the car and it has fairly fresh paint. Shortly after getting the body back together, the engine developed a suspicious knock and she took ill. Now she really needs to sell the car, but knows she won't get much as it looks like it needs a new engine. There's a '57 engine & transmission for sale locally. I know the bell housings are different so the 364 won't bolt up to the '55 transmission, but since a '57 Dynaflow is included, I wonder if a '57 torque ball would mate to the '55 torque tube. There are a few other snags with this plan (like the '57 has a 4bbl intake, but no carb), but installation itself is the long pole at the moment. I won't worry about the other things until the installation possibility is worked out. Thoughts?
  3. I'll throw this out there for fun. If I open a rejected image in an EXIF data editor and change the orientation, it flies. For instance, if I open a rejected (horizontal) PowerShot image at http://www.thexifer.net/index.php I see: If I change it to None or Horizontal (normal), it will upload. If I change it to Rotate 90 CW, it will fail. Likewise, if I take a rejected vertical from a Pentax or iPhone and change it to None or Horizontal (normal), it will upload. The forum image handler seems to be rejecting images based on EXIF data tags, but if I take a previously acceptable image and change the EXIF tag to Rotate 90 CW, it still uploads. Perhaps there's an EXIF standards versioning issue here?
  4. Hey, I figured out the 'Member Title' thing... or at least a workaround. From a desktop, the field would never show to edit it, but from the mobile version it does. Once I edited it there, the field shows in the desktop version.
  5. False. I tried it with 2 Pentax cameras (K-r and WG-II) and verticals fail from them as well. Tried uploading from a Canon PowerShot SX710, and NONE of the images will upload (portrait or landscape) until I run them through LightRoom.
  6. Yep. I think it's a bug in the forum software. If it were just iPhones, I'd say there's something about Apple's codec, but the same behavior between a phone camera and a DSLR? That makes me think that the forum's image handler is improperly rejecting photos tagged as vertical shots. Any photo I shoot vertically (portrait) and attempt to upload without doing any image processing gets rejected. These three were rejected, and all I did was crop them and now they work.
  7. Trying a different camera & process... Not just iPhone related. The vertical image straight out of the camera failed too. Reprocessing the image in Lightroom fixed it though. These were shot with a Pentax K-r.
  8. Testing my horizontal/vertical theory... Yep, that seems to be it.
  9. Here's a bit of the EXIF data from the Dr. Olds shot that keeps getting rejected: I have tried uploading the unprocessed image from my phone, Chrome, and Explorer with no luck. The forum software calls it a 1.7 mb file: The photo of my grandma's engine in the back of my truck loads just fine, and the EXIF data shows it's practically identical: Even though, due to the nature of jpeg compression, the image shows as a larger file at 2.5 mb: Conclusion: Size, resolution, and source seem to make no difference. There is something buried in the image file itself that the forum software kicks out. Is it because I shot one horizontal and one vertical? Perhaps I'll test that in a few minutes...
  10. You could buy this one and re-sell after your trip! If I can figure out how to post a working link... Oh, forget it. There's a link on Bertha's page (see my signature)...
  11. Well, since all of those photos were Oldsmobile related, I consider them high value! All of the color images were taken with the same camera phone. There should have been no appreciable difference between the uploadability of those photos, but for some reason, the site management didn't like the first two until they were reprocessed. The first thing I'd do is ask the boss-man what a -200 error is. It's probably something really helpful like 'General Error' but we won't know unless we ask. If the management would like me to email the unmolested rejected files to them so they can explain why their software doesn't like them, I'd be glad to do so.
  12. All images uploaded with my phone, 2 I tried to upload twice and they failed... Tried to email them (full size, 4.9MB total) to my PC, and upload them from there. No dice. Emailed them again, but downsized them ("large," 1.5MB for the pair), and here they are:
  13. So close... I have a friend with a '55 that she needs to sell. Fresh body & paint, and developed a rod knock right after she got the trim back on. She doesn't have the money to fix the motor, and this would probably make a great option if it would bolt in. I know this engine won't mate to her transmission, but what about the torque ball interface? Would the '57 Dynaflow couple up to her '55 torque tube?
  14. Try my friends in Ripley, Oklahoma at RK Machine. (918) 372-4537
  15. Shortly after we acquired our 46R, we ran across another 1956 46R at a show and he started talking headlights. He had one pebble background ('55-'59?) T3 and one stripe background ('60-'67?) T3. As I recall, he said the pebble background bulb was blown out, but he kept it in for originality. He was desperately looking for a pair of pebble T3s... Now, this was over 20 years ago, and we didn't have the internet like it is today, so I don't know if repros were available then like they are now. A few years back we pulled our working pebble background bulbs, put them on a shelf, and started running with modern halogens installed. NOBODY has ever said a word to us about our 'non-authentic' headlights. Not.Once.

  18. Those are probably Astro calipers. Worst case, you might need to knock the corners off them, but that's probably already been done. https://scarebird.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59&product_id=58
  19. Too big? From my phone, if I try to exceed the 19.53mb limit, even after I reduce the size it will keep rejecting me.
  20. When we moved from Michigan to Kansas, we kids expected Gunsmoke/Dodge City. Major disappointment. Back on topic (sorta)... while everyone else was watching election results Tuesday night, I was watching Gunsmoke!
