So much for being environmentally friendly in their logistics or, lack of.
I'm still trying to find the cheapest way to ship the Riv's 30 lb steering box. So far, the rates exceed the core charge!
Also, Courier companies think their Customers want their various forms of express service or, make you think so.
I've found resto parts vendors prefer UPS. Here in Canada, we hate them, full of hardship fees. We get nailed big time. Fedex was the last major shipper within reason. But somewhere around 2017, they changed thier Ts & Cs and rates to be like all the rest.
I'm not sure if this is still the case. But, as a receiver, I stipulate P/U at the courier's Airport Depot. I did this with my interior as Clark's Corvair did not do my preferred USPS & Canada Post. A slight savings but this avoided having me deal with a driver who is basically a collection man.
I don't do vending but, I will be down sizing in the coming years. Many things to sort. Then chuck and list the remainder in local and Riview classifieds for local pickup - Cheap!
I feel your pain Bill!
PM Tom Telesco. He has come up with a system to ship steering boxes using a USPS flat rate box. He does it all the time. I know USPS rates have gone up but, that method should still be quite reasonable comparatively. If not, bite the bullet and pay the core charge. When I got my box from Tom I paid the core charge and then sold my box. I felt this was more economical than paying for shipping the core to Tom. Basically, it was a wash. I don't know the condition of your old box. Mine was still good.

Hi Bill,
This is the typical stuff folks dont realize about vending...in additional to all the time spent on necessities.
Regarding the post office, I use them when I`m shipping west of the Rockies, or south of the Mason Dixon line, or farther east than PA, from here in the midwest. Their flat rate shipping options USUALLY work out to be less expensive as compared to the other shipper I use when shipping to farther destinations. I never use Fed Ex, so my comparisons are the USPS vs. UPS. This is true ONLY for the post office flat rate option....their priority mail options are ALWAYS more expensive as compared to UPS, especially when adding insurance.
I can relate a very recent and similar experience I had with UPS...I neglected to put a unit number on a very large, unorthodox package which I shipped to CA. A clerk from UPS called me person to person from the facility closest to the destination and informed me they couldnt deliver. I was presented with two options: call the recipient and arrange for pickup which was very close to the destination or use the tracking tool to elaborate on the address for immediate delivery. I called my customer and he picked up while running errands. This is a good example why I use Buster Brown for the majority of my shipments.
I didnt realize Fed Ex only bills after delivery because I dont use them...sounds like a blank check before rendering service to me...definitely not a business model I`m interested in as a customer.
Tom
Hi Tom,
I have never had a problem in the past with the after delivery billing. It always came in as quoted or slightly lower. That is good to know that UPS will call you. I had assumed that FedEx would do the same. We have a UPS hub here in town. It is further away for me than the FedEx drop off which is why I usually used FedEx or USPS whenever possible. I will definitely change my thinking on this. I don't want to go through this aggravation again.

I recently had an experience with shipping parts that I would like to pass on to all of you so that you do not have the same thing happen to you and also the need to vent as this still has me livid.
I sold some parts to someone at the end of October. I usually use FedEx as the USPS has gotten so crazy with their new pricing and FedEx is the most convenient for me. I shipped the parts to this person using FedEx and the shipping estimate was $15.15 using their online shipping service. FedEx does not charge you until the package is delivered. The price charged may be higher or lower depending on how accurate your weights and measurements were.
The other day I received my credit card bill and was shocked to see that the bill for this delivery was $61.61! I filed a dispute with FedEx via e-mail and was told to contact their "Revenue Services Billing Team". The person that I sold the parts to had inadvertently left off their apartment number when they gave me their address. That's where the trouble begins. Initially I was puzzled by this as FedEx will not let you print a label unless you give them the recipient's phone number. I foolishly thought this was there so that if there was a problem with the shipment or delivery they could contact them. Wrong.
I called the "Revenue Services Billing Team" and this is what I was given for the breakdown of the additional charges.
$18.00-because they could not deliver the package as they did not know the unit number (refer to statement about the contact number). It cost more for this charge to take it back to the local FedEx center than it did to deliver it from central Wisconsin to California! It was pointed out to me that they had driven all the way out to this address to deliver this package and were not able to deliver the package, so they had to drive the package all the way back to the FedEx center so that they could research the correct unit. Foolish me, I thought they had a truck packed full of packages that were to be delivered to the same general area and when they were all delivered they drove back to the FedEx location so that the truck could be reloaded for the next day. Apparently, in this area they load and deliver one package at a time, deliver it and then the driver leaves the truck and walks back to the FedEx center.
$14.00-Additional handling charge. It was explained to me that this package could not be processed on their automated conveyor system and had to scanned in "by hand". The package was a standard shipping tube 36" X 4" X4". When asked if this was a charge that was levied on all shipping tubes, he had no answer.
$4.00-Charge for delivering to a residence. This was initially part of the original charge. Apparently going to the same place twice counts as delivering to 2 separate residences.
$5.95-Charge was assessed because it was being delivered during a "peak" delivery period. The package was shipped on October 29th. Who knew that Halloween caused such an upsurge in deliveries?
$5.42-Fuel surcharge. This charge as like the residential charge is levied in the original cost of delivery.
Total Extra charges of $47.37 on a $15+ delivery.
Take care when giving out shipping addresses to make sure they are complete.

Hi Matthew,
I enjoyed your video! Thanks for sharing your experience with the two quarter window seal brands you evaluated.
I need to replace the original seals on my '65 as they long ago split at the bottom and have been held together with black fabric tape - not ideal.
Based on your review, I'll order the CARS quarter window seals and give them a go!
Question - are the original steel-cored seals glued into the chromed window channels? Are these hard to get out? Do I just yank with pliers, or will they slide out easily with a bit of persuation?
Thanks again,
Another route to consider is Steele Rubber Products or Rubber the Right Way. They seem to pattern very carefully to recreate products as original. I have purchased from both companies and I have never been disappointed with their products. I replaced one of my rear quarter window seals recently and opted for the Steele Rubber Products version. Probably due to pricing at the time. When purchasing items from either of those companies or CARS, Inc. Old Buick parts check e-bay to see if they have the product you are looking for there. It is many times cheaper than going to their websites or you can save on shipping or both. Very happy with the quarter window seal. It looks as original, no problems with fitment and seals as it should. Trimming is needed at the bottom which is no big deal.

Just google search "new dash pad for 63-65 Riviera" and they come right up.........I just noticed however
that they are temporarily out of stock and expect to have them available again in March.
I don't know if this will happen with this item and I hope I not. Don't hold your breath when when OPGI says out of stock and gives you an arrival date. I am still waiting for items that I ordered from them (before I knew better) 7 years ago when I got my 1963. I would periodically check back and the expected date of restock would come and go to be replaced by a date further in the future. Temporarily out of stock seems to be permanently out of stock in some cases.

My mother passed away a couple of weeks ago. We have begun the process of cleaning out her house. My step-dad was the head mechanic at the local Chevrolet/Buick garage where I grew up. Amongst some of the things in the garage was a coffee can marked "valves". Theses appear to be used pieces but, knowing him if he saved them, they were good. I have no idea what they are from or for. I suspect all GM. From what I gather the 3974290 rocker arm kit was for the 58-89 GM small block V8. I know that this is a Riviera forum but, I also know many of you have or know someone with small block Chevys or other GM cars in general. If anyone thinks they may be of value you, they are yours for shipping. I don't want to scrap them if someone could use them. PM me if interested. Thanks.

P.S. Does anyone know why pictures sometimes load cockeyed for no apparent reason? Seems to happen from time to time.

I think they are generally increasing in price, and that that particular car LOOKED like a decent value. Especially if one wasn't concerned about an awesome paint job and wanted the car to be a cool weekend driver. I think
Rivs have long been down in value and not as appreciated as they should be. However, that seems to be changing. It seems like really nice examples that have a good finish, no rust and not a lot to be done to them are trading between 30-40k. I know that I have my '65 insured for 24k, and my insurance company won't up the coverage until I get an appraisal. Wanting to insure it for 35k or so, but I am still hunting a good appraiser in my area, and that is a hard row to hoe.
Mark,
I have my 63 insured through Hagerty. I had it insured for 30k. They reviewed my policy this year and they called me to suggest I up my coverage after the underwriter saw the photos of my car that they had me send in when I first started with them. No appraiser needed. They are very accommodating with insuring for the value you want. I am now insured for 35k.

Bill, does your '63 have AC and that 1/4" fuel return line? I want to change my fuel pump for reliability. Better fuel economy would be nice but, not hopeful.
John,
I looked and could not find the receipt for my fuel pump. NAPA does have a couple listed on their website but, whether either of them is the same one as I got I don't know. I have a fuel pump that I purchased from Carquest that I carry on long trips. I will look at that.
Yes, my car is an AC car and has the return line.

Constant fear of just such things keep the Riv & I close to home. (As a result I've put less than 3,000 mi on her in the last 30 yrs). There is an excellent monthly car show about twenty mi. from home that requires a drive through some of the scariest urban, & then rural, landscapes in the area. You absolutely could not leave your Riv unattended, nor would you want to sit with it while you wait for rescue. Sadly, I usually go as a spectator. Fortunately I have several local road trip routes laid out which keep me close to home but the Riv still gets regular exercise. As for MPG, I get less than 10, & that's w just one carb. & can someone explain why a new fuel pump would reduce mileage? could the pressure from the old one be too high? If so, that may be my problem. After I recently replaced my tank & fuel lines I removed the hose at the carb inlet & put a jar under it to flush the line & was shocked to see it fill a quart mason jar in about 3 or 4 sec.
Drew,
When my car was getting poor mileage I looked in the chassis manual for possible causes. There are some obvious ones but, one of the causes listed was a bad fuel pump which was exerting too much pressure. The Nailhead is one of those engines that will gobble as much fuel as you give it and not miss a beat. My replacement was one from NAPA and has performed flawlessly for 7 years now.

When I first got my 63 Riviera I was only getting 9-10 mpg no matter how or where it was driven as Aaron65 said about his 63 T-bird. This was the case when I took my first big road trip to Colorado Springs in 2014 for the ROA Convention with my brother-in-law. This was a 2200 mile round trip for us. Premium was in the high $3-low $4. range at the time. That was an eye opener at the time and tested my commitment for taking road trips. The trip was a blast and the car drove beautifully and as many have said that was just part of the old car experience.
A year later the fuel pump gave out as my wife and I were driving back from an event at a near-by town. The fuel pump was replaced and my gas mileage dramatically improved. My brother-in-law and I take a road trip somewhere every summer and we have enjoyed the benefit of that increased mileage. Less money and fewer stops. Since that fuel pump replacement I consistently get 15.5-16.5 mpg on the highway. This was confirmed again as my brother and I took the trip to Missouri for the BCA Heartland regional.
