This car looks pretty nice and for what it is I do like it. But 55ER pointed out the inequities of the car which does affect the price. I don't see 48 grand either. I know that a nice '57 Bonnie convertible will fetch somewhere around a hundred grand but this ain't no Bonneville. So I wonder what the reasonable price for this 58 would be.

This is my favorite year for the sedanet. It appears to be in the Oak park/Forest Park area of Illinois judging by the photos plus it's got Illinois license plates. If this car is as good as it looks the ask is very reasonable. However some might think a Dyna-Slush trans takes some value away. Wish I had the room for this thing as these cars are big!

For Sale 1940 Buick Special four door convertible (Museum Owned)
deac replied to kkcarcrazy's topic in Buick - Pre War
Be careful buying museum cars! All the has to do is look pretty while on display. Too much red in the interior. I like the 4 door convertibles but I am wary about this one. -

That Allstate box is a voltage regulator! I think the engine starts by using a foot starter. These use a coil with one of the leads on top (or bottom) of the coil. Well I guess that the owner needed a coil and didn't take the time to find the correct one so he jerry-rigged it using pipe tape... What and why people do what they with these old cars I'll never know! IMO a stock setup rules. The drive belt look frayed too. -
As I understand the early Cougars are the most desired. This one is pretty plain and not an XR-7. The seller talks about a water pump but one look at that radiator and how the coolant stains at the perimeter of the top tank leaks which leads me to to believe it is going to need both the water pump and a radiator. There is a possibility that the owner really did not do much maintenance. Look carefully before you buy.....

Run and run as fast as you can! -
When I first got the car the engine bay was a disaster. The biggest things were the tri-power set up and the aftermarket chrome valve covers. Those things are long gone now. I located and bought an original air cleaner and the original valve covers with the PONTIAC script on them. here's the air cleaner as it was when I first got it. Most all the rust was surface rust. That air cleaner took a lot of time to get it looking like it does today: Here's a shot of the engine bay. Notice the the accelerator linkage at the back of the manifold is missing and the generator is mis-mounted and askew. Additionally the fan shroud was missing: Here are my cleaned, sanded and painted valve covers: and the engine with the refinished air cleaner:

It does look nice,,,, but! There are no pictures of the undercarriage, engine compartment or the back seat, trunk or rear seat. There's a blue blanket covering the rear seat back which leads me to believe the seller recovered the front seat but not the rear seat. The gas pedal is NOT connected to the throttle rod. The steering wheel is cracked and what's going with the rear window? I get the feeling it's priced at 12 grand for a reason'; it needs work. The seller description is very brief and doesn't say if the car runs or not.

I agree the price is a might bit high; these 2 door sedans just don't bring a lot of money! This is a pretty driver but it does have issues! I don't care for the exhaust tips they do nothing for the car. Those added taillights will never look acceptable regardless of where you mount them. The front bumper looks as though it was painted silver and the drivers side running boards is pretty worn. These are fun cars to own. They drive pretty well and there's lots of parts available. GLWTS

I like these cars. The seller has a "priced for a quick sale", which if it is in the condition the pictures show won't last long! The AC belt has removed which leads me to believe it's more than just a recharge. Moreover I don't like vinyl tops because the can hide rust. The steering is wrapped so how cracked is wheel? I presume it's has a 400ci engine backed by a TH400 trans and 10 bolt rear end which is I what I had in my 71 Formula Firebird. It's a strong powertrain!

These would be for my Buick which has already had a steering failure luckily at 1 mph; if it were at any decent road speed I would be dead or in the hospital. So I am freaked out about that and I don't want to try to save money on tires and find out the hard way that I should have spent more for a better tire. On the other I have heard that Coker manufacturers most tires for old cars by changing the tread pattern and rebrands them. I don't know if they change inner tire make up or not. But I cannot verify that!

Looks like a pretty nice Caddy judging by the cryptic photo's! -
My Buick needs tires and I like the Lester brand tires that I had on my 40 Pontiac Torpedo and my 39 Buick Special. Those tires wore well and since I don't need a period correct name brand tire like Firestone, BF Goodrich or Goodyear a Lester branded is ok by me. Coker also sells the Lester tire, however there a less expensive brand called Coker-Garfield. Has anyone had experience with these tires? Does the saying 'you get what you pay for' apply here?
