  1. What city is it in? My taxes are $6000 here, so about the same as a $1.5M house there? (banging head against wall). Hardest part about leaving this area is the school district. We pay for it in taxes but at least the kids get top notch education. Then again NY has just adopted the common core curriculum which I very against.
  2. John- I am sure there is a sight that you can just type in a zip code and find the school ratings but I was just getting them off Remax website. Click on a house for sale and scroll to the bottom to see the school rating. Here is a example from Petersburg
  3. Small town living is ideal but with my job I am forced to live close to a the interstate and metro city. That doesn't mean I have to live "in" the city. I get paid hourly from the time I leave the house until I get back home, driving included. They don't want to pay me extra just because I want to live out in the sticks. Depends on the company but I might be able to work out a deal where an hour of so each day is not charged. Still I would want to live somewhat close to an interstate because I may have to be at a hospital at 8am but it is 3 hours away. I need to look at school system rankings and find the good schools. I looked up Petersburg and all the schools were rated C or below, many were F. Like most places in the country the schools are refelective of the population. Upper middle class communities will normally have better schools but the cost of living (housing, taxes) will be more. The hardest part so far is finding a place with a large garage/workshop. That is a MUST HAVE. I have a few cars, bikes and boats and have to have a place to work on and store them. I have even looked at finding a home in a town where I could find an old warehouse to buy and turn that into my garage.
  4. Sounds good. I would love to catch a local show and shake some hands. As we all know you meet the nicest people in the world while standing in front of a classic car.
  5. My name is Shane by the way. I was in the Army for 11 years as an aviation electrician, mainly on UH60 Blackhawk helicopters and I was born in 77 hence the UH6077 moniker.
  6. I enjoyed the pilot. As far being different, well I am not sure about that. The behind the scenes stuff may be different (no scripted or made up situations like other shows) but it is filmed exactly like the other car shows. The casual viewer won't be able to tell the difference. I really like the idea behind the show but I think in order for it to get picked up it needs to be visually separated from the other shows (car and other wise) on TV now. For instance all the shots of Dale giving commentary are exact duplicates of every car show around, sitting screen left with cars in the background. It would be nice if the show could tout itself as being non-scripted but no channel would ever pick it up because they would be admitting that their other shows are not "reality". So again I really enjoyed the show and if were on Velocity I would watch every episode but I think most cars guys are itching for something a new and refreshing. I wonder if a one camera shoot would work. Whenever I see someone being filmed coming into a room it instantly throws up red flags. Obviously it was scripted a bit because how would the film crew know where to go. "We are going into this room". "OK, wait a second while we go in and get set up".
  7. Great comments, you guys are the best! I think living outside the city would be ideal. We are taking a week in June to drive down and explore the area. Obviously too soon to seriously look at real estate but just window shopping has brought up some great places. The hardest part is now knowing what areas are nice. For instance I found an excellent historical home in Petersburg. Over 4000 sqft with vaulted ceilings and a huge kitchen. Then I found out that Petersburg is not a nice area. Makes sense why a house that would be $450K here was only $149 there. Getting our boots on the ground will help us narrow down our area. We might just drive through a little town and fall in love with it. I have some emails out to various people through Linkedin asking about their employers and possible positions opening up. I am a Field Systems Engineer, basically field service. Right now my territory is western NY east to Utica and from Massena NY to Syra PA. I drive 50,000 miles a year and cover pretty much every major hospital, regional lab and doctors office as well as industrial customers like Kraft, Purina and Dr Pepper Snapple. I suspect after a move I would be covering DC, Richmond, Durham, VA beach and the whole region.
  8. Thanks for the comments! Wayne if you can hook me up with their Facebook page that would be great. Just knowing they were able to do a tour last week is enough to make me want to move NOW. Hit 50 here today, first time since probably November. Still too much snow to even think about taking the car out. Can't go out till all the salt has been washed away by the spring rains, likely sometime mid April.
  9. We have decided to move further south in the next 12-18 months. We are expecting our 3rd child next month and Rochester is just too expensive to stay much longer. I pay $6000 in property tax and around $500 month to heat during the winter (3000 sq/ft). Our target area would just north of Richmond down to Durham, from the Mountains to the coast. Looking at real estate around Richmond is enough to make my jaw drop. I think we could save around $15K a year between taxes, heating, fuel and general lower cost of living and as a bonus we could actually go outside 11 months out of the year without risk of freezing to death. Does anyone have any good or bad experiences from living there? I do field work on infectious disease diagnostic equipment. If a position opened up with my company in the area I would relocate but if not I will just sign on with another company. My wife is a PT so neither of us should have a hard time finding employment.
  10. Not many cars older than early 50's. That would be like driving around today and not seeing any car older than early 2002. If you go directly to the youtube video you will see a link to a modern day version of sunset driving. After watching for about 2 monutes I got bored because there was not one car that I said "ohh, look at that". Just a bunch of blah, even the wealthy cars lack style.
  11. Called today and they said they were behind a bit. They emailed me my member number and pin number a few hours later. They said it would be a few weeks before the membership card arrives but as long as I have the member number I should be good.
  12. I will be patient as well. If the need for a membership number comes up I sure they can accommodate me. The world wide web has made us all expect things to happen instantly so I guess a little patience could serve me well.
  13. A month and a half is really unacceptable. I haven't been waiting that long. Holidays, busy staff or whatever is not an excuse to make someone wait over a month to get something they paid for. You need to call and complain, in a nice way of course. There might be someone in the office that is slacking off and the rest of the staff may have no idea.
  14. I can see it now. Many years ago a guy is in the middle of a snow storm working on the engine, trying to get it to run so he can get to work the next day. After cutting for hours with numb fingers the piece finally lets go and drops. Guys looks for a few minutes and figures it must have fallen into the snow, no worries. I would keep it, obviously a good luck charm since it never caused any issues.
  15. You should call and check. My book came in like 2 weeks or less, don't exactly remember.
  16. I signed up a while ago but haven't received anything yet. I did get an email saying the order accepted but no membership number or anything else. Seems like I am paying for a year but will really only get 11 months (or less maybe). If I wanted to go to the museum right now or get an AACA discount from a vendor I couldn't because even thought I have paid I don't have a membership number. doesn't really seem fair. I realize getting paperwork and cards sent out can take a while but it should be easy to email a membership number so if nothing else the new guy can proudly say "I am a member!"
  17. Skinny tires saves the day. I always laugh at the huge hollbilly mud trucks with 46 in tires that are 18 in wide. Sure skinny tires may not look "cool" on a big truck but they get the job done.
  18. Blasting steel parts shouldn't cause a problem, just rinse well as others have said. You really need to be careful blasting aluminium and other soft alloys. The media can get embedded in the alloy and then dislodge when the part gets warm and expands. When I blast aluminium I put it in the over for about 10 min @350 then quench it in water to flush out the particles.
  19. Since it has been almost 3 years and still no takers what is the new lowered price?
  20. Saying that the under 40's can't fix anything is like saying that anyone over 60 can't use a computer and yet here I am at 37 with more cars, motorcycles and tools than most repair shops and here many of you are, over 60 and comfortable managing this vast world wide web. When soldiers came back from WWII and started to get away from the farming that their families did everyone thought the country would starve. 70 years later and with a population that has doubled we are still producing enough food for the country. Walk into any repair shop in the country and I will bet that the majority of the workers are under 40. The older guys, if they were any good have likely opened up they own shops and hired some young blood.
  21. Perfect color but I need ones for my 2 dr Desoto. Good luck, they are great.
  22. Hahaha, nothing gets past you guys. I have a feeling we won't ever hear from the original poster again. He just ran into a buzzsaw.
  23. You can't compare the weights of classic cars and modern cars. Most of the added weight is due to safety features, not just luxury add ons. Sound deadening, better interior materials also add to the weight. Of course we all love, even prefer antique cars but they are no where near as good as modern cars. That is like saying old TVs and radios are better than modern versions. Technology and engineering improvements are great but I also appreciate all that came before it. I do agree that the WWII generation is far superior than todays in pretty much every measurment that matters (work ethic, love of fellow humans, respect of elders, selfless service, fixing instead of replacing, family above TV).
