    Engine Troubles

Did it put out blue smoke or black smoke?
  2. Found it in a field huh? Well it hadn't been there long! What did ya give if you don't mind sayin', if you do-that's OK. I'm not sure proper ettiquette permits me to ask.. NICE RIDE! ........TexasJohn
  3. Ditto! Only a new hose will work once you use a screw clamp on it for any period of time, hose takes a "set". New hose old clamp. You might get lucky by trimming end off hose.
  4. Ray, check all plug wires just for grins at speed before you drive it, you might get lucky and catch it skipping. Same on road test, if it starts missing but the strobe is consistent, move to another wire.
  5. You may be correct, maybe he should tee into the fuel line with a pressure guage at that clear fuel filter and drive it again.
  6. Or 800 idle and loose mounts? Just saying the noise may not be coming FROM the transmission internally, as in a failure.
  7. Not understanding all this but I'm still listening. EDIT; And we still don't know if the ignition lost power, don't we have to get a test light on something?
  8. Thanks guys, I believe you have me pointed the right direction. If you see anything else in the data, please let me know. I'm gonna revisit that MAF. John
  9. I tried to upload copy of my scanner manual, failed. It says the 02 monitor test retrieves info previously stored by ECM. The Onboard monitor test was vague as whether it was on demand or not.
  10. Glad you brought that up about the MAF, I was removing the intake boot off the throttle body one day and punched the airstream honeycomb. The sensor was not damaged, just a small area of the honeycomb. Problem of setting P0171 does seem to have become more of a problem since that incident. John EDIT: The only pattern I can see while monitoring is that the STFT approaches maximum, 25% at times on base idle but trim % decreases as rpm is increased. Seems to be most prevalent at idle, returning to normal trim numbers while driving. Setting code today was predictable, came back every time on startup or idling after clearing with scanner. NOW it won't ???????? Probably will set as soon as wife drives it tomorrow.
  11. I don't have a clue, my scanner book says that stuff is identified by the OEM. My IAT reads ambient on cold engine.
  12. The rear transmission pump catches up and takes over at about 30 mph if the front pump is weak, thats why it locks in after you get rolling, As long as you don't make it slip it's fine, just don't take off "fast" in drive, use Low for that.
  13. B, You most likely have low line pressure causing slow incomplete drive clutch engagement until increased rpm and pump pressure engages clutch pack. The only sure way to troubleshoot is pressure checks like Willie said. The "clunk" is another issue, not transmission related. Higher idle rpm exacerbates the problem but you may have loose mounts on engine or transmission or thrust pad. It should not be harsh at base idle of 450-500. John PS Low and reverse always have a more aggressive engagement.
  14. idle after road test.pdfHey guys, I need some ideas. '98 Olds 88. Inspection time, light comes on randomly, runs great and good mileage. I ran live data scan after clearing code, not driven enough afterward to reset Readiness states. First file is at hot idle, second and third files are with throttle cracked open a little, in driveway. I don't know how to arrange them side by side for easier reading. I am going to set it to trigger a snapshot when the code sets and get that data on here also. I am using a hand held scanner and that is all the info that it displays to monitor. If you have time to look at data and give suggestions,, I appreciate it. Thanks By the way, my friends '95 that was missing.......I put inline spark flasher on wires and coil was bad for #2 and 5, #5 showed random miss and 2 fired a few times and quit, plugs showed that also by color, new coil fixed it right up. TexasJohnSteady fast idle.pdf Well I just drove it to get snapshot by DTC trigger, of course it won't set code now. It did 3 times and I would reset it. Now when I need to, it won't set. So I recorded data under steady driving conditions, and 02 monitor test at idle. Steady fast idle 2.pdf Hot idle data.pdf data at 50mph.pdf on board monitor test.pdf 02 monitor test.pdf
  15. King Spine! Phhhhttttt! I'm outa here.! (Bob, I AM Good, modest also.)
  16. Yeah, sorry for the moment of illogical thought processing. TJ
  17. Continuing saga.. Now your floats are too low and choke too lean.
  18. ............Dang Bob, you need to use spell-check. Did you mean "king spline" instead of "king spine" ??
  19. Like he said. (By the way, mine does that too but is so weak that the drive clutch won't hold under power. It is a temporary trans and an oringinal that I just plopped in while I fix mine. Surprising that it worked at all, I think I need to drive it more and soften up some piston seals.)
  20. ................Respectfully re-submitted for consideration. I thought you would have all your ignition wires and cap on by now..TexasJohn
  21. Hmm,.......How are you guys bending pushtubes? Maybe if you don't twist them over 5000 rpm? Not understanding. TexasJohn
  22. .......Yeah, we like to drive ours! Checked your oil lately?Do your wipers and washers work?Is it inspected? Or do you have it up on a big pedestal just to look at and brag on it? TexasJohn
  23. .............Mother dear, don't forget this also.
