  1. After 1925, Cadillac's primary coachbuilders were reliably Fisher for production styles and Fleetwood for series and full custom styles such as this Style 4260 5-passenger Sport Phaeton, with few exceptions.

  4. Simply conjecture, but this may have been the chief engineer on this bridge project. Given they arrived in a Daniels V8 touring which was a $5,350 car in the early 1920's, it seems a safe guess.
  5. Actually, the arced 'torsion-bar' driveshaft was massively overengineered for reliable, trouble-free operation which it performed in real-world operation. The less robust components were in the transaxle particularly the V8 Lemans. These Tempest/Lemans cars are some of the most interesting '60's GM products.
  6. In defense of the beleaguered 1956-'57 Hudson styling, this diatribe bears repeating: The freelance industrial designer Richard Arbib was contracted to create the restyles for the 1956-'57 Hudsons on the existing body shell with no major sheet metal stampings changes. The mandate limited changes to front grille, side trim patterns, taillights and details. The body series dates back to the 1952 Nash Statesman and Ambassador which became the basis for the 1955-'57 Hudsons with the Nash and Hudson merger to form American Motors. The 1955 Hudson styling was created inhouse by applying features such as the eggcrate grille and taillights from the initially planned continuation of the Step-Down 1955 Hudsons which were in progress before the merger. Personally, of all the styling carried by that 1952-'57 Nash/Hudson body series, the 1955 Hudsons are the cleanest, most elegantly detailed and appealing of the group. My taste notwithstanding, AMC President George Romney felt the next Hudson restyle needed more distinction from the Nash with which it clearly shared its body shell/chassis platform. Richard Arbib, who had been designer for Henney Motor Co. the Packard hearse/ambulance coachbuilder, opened his own design consultancy in NYC, taking on contracts for a variety of consumer products. His Benrus wrist watches are some of the finest examples of Mid-Century Modern design. To have an insight into his thinking about automotive styling, Tidewater Oil Company under the Tydol, Flying A and Veedol brands featured a series of his "dream cars" in their 'Veedol "Dream Car" Salon' advertising series. Typically, a vertical half-page advertisement, a different dream car designed by Richard Arbib was shown at the top. Nothing illustrates it better than his "V-Liner Custom Sedan" and "Interplane Sedan." How could the 1956-'57 Hudsons have turned out any differently... Steve

  9. Our natty gentlemen in the most-wanted adult 'toy' of aught-five...
  10. Tire chains were great for traction on snow-packed roads, but hell to ride on and listen to whapping on dry pavement. I still recall seeing men putting on chains while lying in the snow...and hearing the cursing!
  11. Best wishes for a rapid and full recovery. When it comes to the back, do everything the doctors tell you to do. Full range of motion comes with exercise and movement, something as simple as walking. Good luck!
  12. Bill: This is as good as I can get it. The sedan behind the gentleman appears to have been a 1936 Chevrolet. The other four door sedan is also a General Motors/Fisher body 1936. The vent window in the rear quarter window identifies it. We'll be interested to see other family images from your town with cars in the frame. Thanks for sharing. Steve
  13. But, Pierce-Arrow went one better, their model was a "Vestibule Suburban"...

  15. I added the "project" description to tip off prospective buyers this Imperial may have more rust damage than is obvious in the photos. The terse statement "Has some rust." is a warning to inspect it careful first. Does look like a rather nice driver-condtion car now.
  16. Here's a few screen prints, I'd guess a Marmon Sixteen convertible sedan and, as the old saying goes "There is no mistaking a Pierce-Arrow" (at night as well).

  19. The full-length, over-the-cowl hood with sweeping hood doors and opening line is very avant garde for a ca 1929-'30 Lincoln L. As Walt G notes, proportions are always the key. The severe abbreviation of the body mass juxtaposed against the low, separate trunk brings to mind any number of hapless pre-war coupes whose utility was increased by cutting away the deck and installing a pick-up box.
  20. No, not Goggle, The Splendid Stutz, edited by Raymond A. Katzell, page 253. I've both been fascinated by the late 1920's coach built convertible victoria configuration before it became most associated with Dietrich, Rollston and Brunn; and frustrated no full images of the car seem to exist. Advertised as "an 8-passenger coupe"; well, folks were considerably less broad of beam then...
  21. Year: 1928 Make: Stutz Model: Series BB Coachbuilder: Locke Body Style: Convertible Victoria, 6-passenger Attractive style, though something of a novelty to still include a rumble seat with the interior passenger seating of the convertible victoria. New York Custom Salon exhibit.
